Chattanooga Quantum Collaborative Launches Six-Week Quantum Tech Exploration For World Quantum Day

The Chattanooga Quantum Collaborative (CQC) and EPB have launched a six-week exploration of quantum technology to mark World Quantum Day. The initiative includes in-person presentations, video content, and activities, with contributions from quantum experts from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Arizona State University, IonQ, and Qubitekk. The program aims to prepare Chattanooga for opportunities in the emerging quantum sector. CQC CEO Charlie Brock and EPB CEO David Wade emphasized the potential of quantum technology and the need to prepare the community for future job and investment opportunities in the field.

Chattanooga Quantum Collaborative’s Quantum Technology Exploration Initiative

The Chattanooga Quantum Collaborative (CQC), in collaboration with EPB, has announced a six-week exploration of quantum technology to commemorate World Quantum Day on April 14. The initiative, which runs from April 14 to May 31, invites learners of all ages and education levels to delve into quantum technology through a series of activities available on www.GigCityGoesQuantum.com. This initiative is part of a broader community-wide effort to prepare Chattanooga for educational, employment, and business opportunities in the burgeoning quantum sector.

Charlie Brock, CEO of Chattanooga Quantum Collaborative, expressed gratitude to the scientists, instructional designers, teachers, and others who have contributed their expertise to create a collection of learning resources. These resources aim to make quantum learning accessible to everyone. Interactive opportunities, designed for completion at school or home, include a live-stream challenge with students at the EPB Institute of Technology and Networking at Tyner Academy. Other activities feature events with quantum experts from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Arizona State University, IonQ, and Qubitekk, with presentations available both in person and via live stream.

Quantum Learning Resources and Community Engagement

The initiative also offers hands-on activities created by instructional designers at the Public Education Foundation, the Enterprise Center, and the National Q-12 Partnership. Dr. Justin Robertson, Hamilton County Schools Superintendent, emphasized the importance of preparing students for a future of careers in quantum. He encouraged students, staff, families, and the community to utilize the resources made available for World Quantum Day throughout the year.

To promote participation, CQC will give away five $150 Amazon gift cards through a drawing among participants who register at GigCityGoesQuantum.com. The 2024 World Quantum Day observation follows a successful 2023 initiative that saw more than 2,000 activities completed by students and adult learners across the Chattanooga and Hamilton County area. In 2024, partners expect to see 4,000 quantum-related activities completed during the 6-week observation period.

Chattanooga’s Quantum Technology Development

Chattanooga is recognized for its potential in quantum technology advancements. EPB CEO David Wade highlighted the significant talent gaps across the industry and expressed hope that through CQC’s and World Quantum Day learning activities, the community would be better prepared for the jobs and investment opportunities that await.

Contributors and partners in commemorating World Quantum Day include UTC, Oak Ridge National Lab, IonQ, Hamilton County Schools, Chattanooga State Community College, Qubitekk, the Public Education Foundation, the Chattanooga Public Library, Chattanooga Technology Council, the Company Lab, the Enterprise Center, Chattanooga 2.0, the City of Chattanooga, and Hamilton County.

Gig City Goes Quantum and Quantum Technology Commercialization

Launched in March 2023, Gig City Goes Quantum is part of Chattanooga’s larger effort to leverage the EPB Quantum Network℠ powered by Qubitekk, to accelerate the commercialization of quantum technology. Public and private organizations across Chattanooga continue collaborating to develop a quantum ecology to grow education, business, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

World Quantum Day is a global observance to promote public awareness and understanding of quantum science and technology around the world, beginning every April 14.

The Chattanooga Quantum Collaborative (CQC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to establishing a robust quantum ecosystem in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee, and beyond. By leveraging quantum resources and mobilizing diverse partnerships for the benefit of the region’s people, businesses, and communities, the CQC aims to drive workforce development, economic growth, and infrastructure advancement in the quantum technology sector.

EPB is a customer-focused technology company that delivers innovative power and telecommunications solutions to the Chattanooga area. In 2010, EPB completed a 100% fiber optic network accessible to all its customers, launching America’s first community-wide Gig speed internet. In 2022, EPB established our nation’s first commercially available quantum network—EPB Quantum Network℠ powered by Qubitekk. This effort aligns local job creation efforts with the national priority to accelerate the commercialization of quantum technology.
