Innolume has selected Veeco’s GEN2000 Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) system to expand production of gallium arsenide (GaAs)-based quantum dot lasers, a move driven by increasing demand for optical connectivity in hyperscale AI infrastructure and cloud data centers. The investment comes as the market for optical transceivers utilizing these lasers is projected to reach nearly $80 billion by 2031, according to LightCounting, fueled by bandwidth needs and a focus on energy efficiency. Quantum dot lasers address limitations of conventional technologies in co-packaged optics (CPO) due to their superior temperature stability and low power consumption. “Quantum dot lasers are playing an increasingly important role in silicon photonics and AI-driven optical interconnects,” said Sven Rüger, CEO of Innolume. “The GEN2000 MBE system provides the production capacity, material quality, and manufacturing efficiency needed to support our technology roadmap and future manufacturing requirements.”

This expansion addresses fundamental limitations of conventional laser technologies struggling with thermal and power constraints, particularly within co-packaged optics (CPO) architectures. The appeal of quantum dot lasers lies in their inherent characteristics, narrow spectral linewidth, low threshold current, and superior temperature stability, which position them as an ideal emitter technology for CPO applications. Veeco’s GEN2000 MBE system was specifically chosen for its ability to deliver both increased production capacity and the material quality necessary to meet Innolume’s future manufacturing needs. Innolume is also integrating Veeco’s Spector Ion Beam Deposition system to enhance its coating capabilities, further solidifying a manufacturing process reliant on Veeco’s technology across multiple critical steps.
