Falqon Systems helps shape EU rules for quantum tech

Michiel Plaisier, CFO of Falqon Systems, contributed to a position paper by the European Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC) advocating for specific EU dual-use controls on quantum technology, directly positioning the company within the development of European quantum policy, the company says. Published in October 2026, the whitepaper details Falqon Systems’ views on safeguarding strategic technologies while enabling European manufacturing and deployment.

According to QuIC, Europe’s quantum industry requires these controls to protect sensitive capabilities and strengthen its industrial position. Falqon Systems defines Quantum Secure Networks (QSN) as embedding security into network architecture itself, rather than protecting individual communication links.

Falqon Systems Advocates EU Dual-Use Controls for Quantum Tech

This paper advocates for specific EU dual-use controls designed to both safeguard strategic technologies and support the growth of European quantum companies, allowing them to scale manufacturing and deployment across trusted markets. This contrasts with traditional approaches that focus on protecting individual communication links. QSN aims for a security model at the infrastructure level that considers the entire system. Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD) forms the technological foundation of these networks, removing detector-side vulnerabilities and enabling secure key distribution across scalable, multi-user architectures.

According to the company, this makes MDI-QKD particularly well-suited for building resilient and operational quantum secure communication infrastructure. The company’s recent rebranding from Q*Bird B.V. to Falqon Systems B.V. does not represent a new legal entity, with the same Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) number and VAT registration remaining unchanged.

This transition consolidates the Falqon portfolio into a unified product solution, intended to enable the development of future technologies under a single banner. “Future technologies will be developed under the Falqon Systems portfolio as part of a unified product solution that enables Quantum Secure Networks (QSN),” the company states, highlighting its commitment to a cohesive and scalable quantum security ecosystem.

Measurement-Device-Independent QKD Underpins Falqon Quantum Secure Networks

Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD) remains central to Falqon Systems’ vision for Quantum Secure Networks (QSN), extending beyond isolated quantum key generation to encompass complete network infrastructure. The company emphasizes that MDI-QKD removes detector-side vulnerabilities from the QKD security model, enabling secure key distribution across multi-user network architectures, a critical feature for building resilient communication infrastructure.

According to the company, the Falqon portfolio now encompasses the core technologies necessary for both building and operating complete Quantum Secure Networks. Documentation and setup guides for Falqon Systems products are currently available, with a support team available to guide users to the appropriate resources.

Falqon Systems Expands Beyond QKD to Integrated QSN Infrastructure

This engagement positions the company directly within the development of regulations governing strategic technologies, extending its role beyond hardware provision and into the shaping of the broader quantum landscape. The company is developing this expanded infrastructure, recognizing that scalable multi-user network architectures require robust and comprehensive solutions beyond standalone quantum communication technologies.

“Operational Quantum Secure Networks (QSN) require considerably more than quantum key generation alone,” the company states, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to security. Organizations are increasingly seeking interoperable infrastructure capable of supporting secure communications across multiple networks and environments, a demand Falqon Systems aims to address.

Instead, it represents a strategic alignment with the growing need for complete operational lifecycle support for QSNs, building on demonstrated scalability and readiness across real-world network infrastructures, the firm reports. Falqon Systems defines itself as focused on building the infrastructure to deploy, integrate, manage, and operate these networks, evolving from standalone technologies toward integrated infrastructure supporting trusted digital connectivity and future quantum networking capabilities.

Company Transition: Q*Bird B.V. Becomes Falqon Systems B.V.

Falqon Systems B.V. has formally registered a name change, a move that preserves the existing Dutch legal entity, its Chamber of Commerce number and VAT registration details. This rebranding is not a restructuring, but a strategic shift reflecting a maturing quantum market and evolving customer needs, according to the company. Existing contractual agreements and documentation, including the Falqon MDI-QKD Series, Key Manager and Domain Controller, remain valid and will be updated gradually with the new corporate identity.
