More than 300 quantum computing ambassadors have benefited from the expertise of Robert Loredo, experience he brings to Florida Atlantic University as the newly appointed executive director for Quantum Technologies. Beginning July 1, Loredo will lead FAU’s plans to expand research, workforce development, and industry collaborations in the rapidly advancing field. The appointment signals an immediate focus on integrating on-campus quantum hardware, including a D-Wave Advantage2 system with over 4,400 qubits, into the university’s research and teaching programs. “Robert is joining Florida Atlantic University at a defining moment for our research trajectory and quantum ambitions,” said Gregg Fields, Ph. D., FAU’s vice president for research, adding that Loredo’s leadership will be crucial in translating quantum capability into real-world impact.

Loredo’s arrival on July 1st will accelerate FAU’s quantum ambitions, with plans to integrate on-campus quantum hardware into both research and educational programs. This positions the university to capitalize on Florida’s growing quantum innovation ecosystem and increasing commercial investment in the field. Loredo brings over two decades of experience bridging advanced computing, education, and workforce development, skills crucial for FAU’s vision. He has already trained more than 300 quantum computing ambassadors globally, demonstrating a pre-existing network and expertise in building a skilled quantum workforce before beginning his role. This experience will be vital as FAU prepares to host a large-scale quantum computer on campus, achieved through a partnership with D-Wave Quantum Inc. to install an Advantage2 annealing quantum system featuring over 4,400 qubits later this year. Fields, FAU’s vice president for research, will oversee this implementation.
The Advantage2 system will provide hands-on access to quantum hardware for researchers and students and connect FAU to the Florida LambdaRail secure quantum network, fostering collaborative research and quantum-safe communications across the state. Loredo intends to guide the Center’s strategic direction, emphasizing algorithm research, software innovation, and the development of hybrid classical-quantum workflows. “It’s an extraordinary opportunity to join an institution that is not only participating in the quantum era but actively defining it,” Loredo stated. He further emphasized the importance of developing the talent and algorithms necessary to fully unlock the potential of quantum computing, aiming to create an ecosystem where research, education, and industry converge.
