New York Creates will receive $1.25 million over five years as part of a $27.9 million National Science Foundation initiative led by Princeton University, aiming to overcome manufacturing hurdles in quantum computing. The Manufacturable and Resilient superconducting QUantum Information Systems (MARQUIS) Quantum Leap Challenge Institute will unite two dozen laboratories across nine research institutions to address challenges in building core components for quantum processors.

MARQUIS Institute Focuses on Scalable Superconducting Quantum Processors
NY Creates will dedicate $1.25 million over five years to the MARQUIS Quantum Leap Challenge Institute, a substantial investment focused on translating quantum research into scalable technologies. This funding, part of a larger $27.9 million National Science Foundation initiative, will support research, technology scaling, and workforce development crucial for advancing quantum computing. Satyavolu Papa Rao, Senior Director of Emerging Technologies and Research at NY Creates, emphasized the organization’s unique position to connect research with manufacturing, stating that NY Creates is uniquely positioned to help bridge the gap between quantum research and scalable manufacturing.
The NY Creates team will specifically test innovative materials and processes at the 300mm wafer scale, targeting mid-scale superconducting quantum processors, the fundamental building blocks of quantum computation. This work will focus on improving the scalability of materials and fabrication approaches within standard CMOS-compatible manufacturing environments.
Nathalie de Leon, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Princeton University and director of the new institute, highlighted a critical need for reinvention in the field. She noted that the community has been using essentially the same materials technology for about a quarter century, and while that technology has worked well for experimental prototypes and small-scale systems, building quantum computers at a scientifically useful scale requires reinventing the most basic elements.
NY Creates will also expand opportunities for students and researchers to gain hands-on experience in advanced semiconductor manufacturing, fostering a skilled quantum workforce and supporting the development of databases to improve understanding of quantum device performance.

NY Creates Leverages 300mm Wafer Scale for Quantum Materials Testing
This approach targets mid-scale superconducting quantum processors, utilizing circuits with Josephson junctions to perform calculations beyond the capabilities of conventional computers. Dr. said that through its advanced 300mm semiconductor R&D infrastructure and deep industry partnerships, NY Creates will work alongside MARQUIS collaborators to evaluate, translate, and scale promising quantum materials and processes.
