Canada invests $195M in Xanadu for quantum computer manufacturing

The Government of Canada is committing $195 million to Xanadu Quantum Technologies, marking the largest investment in quantum manufacturing in Canadian history. This funding completes the federal portion of Project OPTIMISM, a potential $390 million initiative designed to establish manufacturing capabilities, including photonic chip integration and semiconductor testing, that currently do not exist at a large scale.

Xanadu intends to use the investment to build a vertically integrated supply chain, manufacturing all components in-house for future quantum data centres. “This agreement is a major milestone for Xanadu and for Canada’s ambition to lead in quantum technology and advanced manufacturing,” said Dr. Christian Weedbrook, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Xanadu.

Unlike conventional computers built from readily available parts, utility-scale quantum computers require specialized capabilities currently unavailable, including the precise heterogeneous integration of photonic chips and advanced wafer-level semiconductor testing. This approach is designed to support the company’s roadmap toward building quantum data centres and establishing a robust Canadian quantum supply chain. Xanadu plans to move forward with establishing this infrastructure in Canada, strengthening the country’s quantum supply chain and creating a foundation for future quantum data-centre deployment, as stated by company representatives. The anticipated benefits of this investment extend beyond quantum computing itself.

The advanced photonic packaging, heterogeneous integration techniques, and wafer-level testing infrastructure Xanadu develops are also foundational to several rapidly expanding segments of the global semiconductor industry, including telecommunications, artificial intelligence hardware, and sensing technologies. The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, emphasized the broader economic implications, stating, “Building Canada strong means investing in the industries that will strengthen our economy today and into the future.

Quantum technology represents a tremendous opportunity to create good jobs, strengthen our economic sovereignty, and grow industries here at home.” The Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, added that strategic investments like this one help transform Canadian breakthroughs into competitive businesses and ensure Canada remains a global leader in quantum innovation.
