Utah State University professor earns recognition for 40 years of AI research.

Utah State University professor Heng-Da Cheng’s four decades of artificial intelligence research are documented in more than 140 journal papers, 200 conference papers, and 15 books and book chapters. Cheng, along with Kevin Moon, was featured in the AI Utah 100 2026 Yearbook, which recognizes leaders shaping the state’s growing AI ecosystem.

Currently, Cheng’s team is integrating classical AI and deep learning to improve system performance and explore new applications. “I can exchange ideas with people from different fields, explore the theory and practice aspects of AI, and I can further help the students,” Cheng said.

Cheng’s team currently integrates classical AI and deep learning, a strategy intended to move beyond recent trends and enhance overall system performance across diverse applications. Cheng said the recognition is something he appreciates. His research extends beyond theoretical development, with a focus on practical application across multiple disciplines.

The breadth of Cheng’s publications demonstrates a sustained contribution to artificial intelligence, establishing a foundation for ongoing research at Utah State University and within the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Center. He views this work as a platform for both advancing the field and mentoring the next generation of AI researchers.
