The University of Melbourne will directly leverage its Centre for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology, the IBM Quantum Hub, and the Melbourne Assessment Centre in a new partnership with the Andhra Pradesh Government in India. This collaboration focuses on establishing a ‘Quantum Valley’ within the state and developing deep-tech capabilities, including quantum sensing for agriculture.
Professor Michael Wesley, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global, Culture and Engagement) at the University of Melbourne, stated that this partnership with Andhra Pradesh reflects a shared vision of leveraging research excellence to address real-world challenges. The initiative will also extend to co-develop curriculum and research with IIT/IISER Tirupati, supporting Andhra Pradesh’s ambition to become a global innovation hub.

This initiative distinguishes itself from broader quantum initiatives by concentrating on regional development, signaling an ambition to cultivate a localized quantum ecosystem. This integration with established Andhra Pradesh academic institutions aims to accelerate knowledge transfer and build a skilled workforce capable of supporting the emerging quantum industry. The scope of the partnership extends beyond quantum computing to encompass pharmaceuticals, bio-manufacturing, dairy technology, and educational assessments, demonstrating a commitment to innovation across multiple sectors.
A joint working group, led by the Melbourne Global Centre in Delhi, will ensure sustained coordination and momentum for these initiatives. The memorandum of understanding was signed earlier this month, solidifying a commitment to translating academic expertise into industry-ready solutions and fostering a new era of collaboration between Australia and Andhra Pradesh.
