QURECA and Oxford spin-out launch quantum lab simulator

QuantrolOx, a University of Oxford spin-out, is partnering with QURECA to launch Quantum EDGE Academy, a new simulator-first training platform designed to bridge the skills gap in the quantum industry. The Academy functions as a virtual quantum lab, offering realistic simulations to build intuition before hands-on work with actual quantum systems.

QURECA brings to the partnership a catalogue of more than 40 Continuing Professional Development-certified courses and an established global network. “You can install the hardware in eighteen months; you cannot conjure an experienced experimentalist in eighteen months,” says Dominic Lennon, Director of Product at QuantrolOx, explaining that the Academy will deliver trained personnel at the speed the industry demands.

QuantrolOx, originating as a research project within the University of Oxford, is now addressing a critical bottleneck in quantum computing: the scarcity of trained personnel. The company’s collaboration with QURECA has yielded Quantum EDGE Academy, a virtual laboratory designed to provide practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. This simulator-first approach aims to accelerate workforce development by offering realistic training experiences without the limitations of physical lab access.

The Academy replicates workflows currently used by quantum hardware teams. QuantrolOx brings its expertise with Quantum EDGE, a measurement and automation platform actively employed in characterizing and controlling qubits, the company says. This isn’t a future projection; the simulation is built upon tools used in real-world quantum labs, ensuring relevance and immediate applicability for learners.

The partnership expands the reach of both organizations, leveraging QURECA’s international network spanning Europe, North America, Latin America, and India. This broadened access is crucial for institutions at various stages of quantum capability development, some expanding existing labs while others are building programs from the ground up. The common challenge, according to QuantrolOx, is a lack of skilled operators to utilize increasingly sophisticated equipment.
