Machine Identities Now Outnumber Humans 144 to 1, AppViewX Reports

The ratio of machine identities to humans has reached 144 to 1, according to AppViewX, a shift prompting the company to release new tools for managing the rapidly expanding number of non-human digital entities. AppViewX now supports hybrid composite post-quantum cryptography (PQC) certificates, allowing organizations to begin transitioning to quantum-safe cryptography without fully overhauling existing infrastructure. This move aligns with a broader governmental push, recently reinforced by the White House’s Executive Order 14412, to secure systems against advanced cryptographic attacks. “AI and post-quantum cryptography are reshaping enterprise security at the same time, and organizations need to be ready for both,” said Archit Lohokare, CEO of AppViewX. The platform also introduces capabilities to modernize certificate lifecycle management programs, targeting 47-day certificate lifespans.

Hybrid PQC Certificates Enable Phased Quantum Migration

The increasing dominance of machine identities over human ones, currently at a ratio of 144 to 1, is fundamentally altering the scale of digital security challenges and demanding new approaches to certificate lifecycle management. AppViewX has responded by introducing support for hybrid composite post-quantum cryptography (PQC) certificates, designed to facilitate a gradual shift toward quantum-resistant security without immediate, disruptive overhauls of existing infrastructure. These hybrid certificates combine conventional cryptographic algorithms like RSA or ECC with the ML-DSA post-quantum algorithm, allowing organizations to begin preparing for the quantum era while maintaining compatibility with legacy systems. This approach extends beyond simply offering a new cryptographic method; it encompasses the entire certificate hierarchy, spanning Root, Intermediate, and End-Entity certificates within the AppViewX PKI framework. to governmental directives, AppViewX is also addressing the industry’s move toward more agile certificate management, specifically targeting 47-day certificate lifespans.

The company’s new capabilities facilitate this modernization by enabling PQC during Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS) migration, streamlining PKI modernization and enhancing crypto-agility through a unified initiative. CMDB-enriched risk assessments further prioritize migration efforts, focusing on areas with the greatest business impact. Central to this modernization is the AppViewX Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server, which allows AI agents to autonomously manage certificates. The MCP Server exposes certificate lifecycle operations as structured actions that AI agents can invoke, triggering requests and renewals based on expiry or policy events.

This automation is governed by existing security policies and provides audit-ready logging of all agent actions, ensuring compliance and accountability. A recent customer case study highlighted how AppViewX helped an enterprise modernize certificate lifecycle management, preparing the organization for the transition to these shorter certificate lifecycles after years of manual processes and outages. Paul Trulove, Chief Product Officer at AppViewX, said, “AI agents are expanding the cryptographic attack surface at the exact moment it needs to become quantum-resistant.” He continued, “Most organizations are treating these as separate challenges, but they are on a collision course that will change the security landscape at a rate most are ill-prepared to address.”
