F3i Supercomputing Center Supports 14,000 Food Operations

More than 14,000 farming and food-processing operations across California’s Central Valley will now have direct access to advanced computing resources thanks to the launch of the F3i Supercomputing Center at Fresno State. The new center is the result of a partnership between F3 Innovate, Fresno State, and the San Diego Supercomputer Center, aiming to bolster innovation within the region’s vital agricultural industry. Historically, investment in artificial intelligence development has largely bypassed the Central Valley, despite its significant contribution to the nation’s food supply; this initiative seeks to reverse that trend and keep economic benefits local. “Artificial intelligence is becoming foundational infrastructure for the global economy,” said Priscilla Koepke, F3i chief executive officer. “The question is whether regions like the Central Valley will simply adopt technologies developed elsewhere, or whether they will help shape and benefit from the next generation of innovation.”

This initiative marks a shift in investment, historically concentrated outside the Central Valley despite its agricultural significance, and aims to foster local innovation rather than relying on externally developed technologies. The F3i Supercomputing Center offers shared access to powerful computing resources, allowing growers and researchers to develop and test AI models without substantial infrastructure costs. The center’s services extend beyond computing power; it provides applied AI services and workforce development programs, including F3i’s Data Challenges and AI Launchpad program with Microsoft, preparing a skilled workforce for the future of agriculture.
