SpaceX’s Fram2 Mission to Explore Earth’s Polar Regions First

In a groundbreaking mission, SpaceX is set to launch its sixth commercial astronaut flight, Fram2, which will be the first human spaceflight to explore Earth from a polar orbit and fly over the planet’s polar regions for the first time. Observing Unusual Light Emissions in Earth’s Polar Regions

During their 3-to-5-day mission, the Fram2 crew plans to observe Earth’s polar regions through Dragon’s cupola at an altitude of 425 – 450 km. By leveraging insights from space physicists and citizen scientists, they will study unusual light emissions resembling auroras. Specifically, they will investigate green fragments and mauve ribbons of continuous emissions comparable to the phenomenon known as STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), which has been measured at an altitude of approximately 400 – 500 km above Earth’s atmosphere.

Understanding Spaceflight’s Effects on the Human Body

In addition to their polar region observations, the Fram2 crew will work with SpaceX to conduct a variety of research aimed at better understanding the effects of spaceflight on the human body. This includes capturing the first human x-ray images in space, developing Just-in-Time training tools, and studying the effects of spaceflight on behavioral health. These findings will be crucial in the development of tools needed to prepare humanity for future long-duration spaceflight.
