$3 Million Funds Quantum Tech Commercialization in Tennessee

Tennessee is directing $3 million in state funding to incentivize National Science Foundation (NSF) X-Labs quantum teams to establish operations within its borders, a financial commitment designed to accelerate the commercialization of advanced quantum technologies. The initiative focuses on teams already nearing practical application, leveraging existing assets like Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and EPB to avoid a lengthy infrastructure build-up. “Over the past few years, Tennessee has earned a reputation as having one of the strongest quantum ecosystems in the country,” said Governor Bill Lee, adding that this investment will help ensure companies developing future quantum technologies choose the state for growth and job creation. Deputy Governor and TNECD Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter stated, “Tennessee is uniquely positioned to help quantum companies move from breakthrough research to real-world deployment,” signaling a shift toward fostering comprehensive innovation ecosystems.

This investment accelerates the transition of advanced technologies developed by these X-Labs teams into viable products and businesses; the initiative specifically targets groups nearing the point of real-world application. The Tennessee Quantum X-Labs Challenge will offer successful teams up to $3 million in state support, alongside access to research infrastructure and commercialization assistance through the state’s established innovation network. LaunchTN is supplementing this funding with priority consideration for its SBIR/STTR Matching Fund and direct investment through InvestTN, creating a pathway for federal funding to translate into sustained growth capital for these ventures. This commitment builds upon a previously approved $43 million investment allocated in the 2026 budget to bolster the state’s quantum infrastructure, positioning Tennessee to attract companies focused on advanced energy, quantum networking, and technology commercialization.
