A new 5,300 m² quantum chip fabrication facility will soon be established in Copenhagen, signaling substantial investment in European quantum manufacturing. Owned by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Quantum Foundry Copenhagen will uniquely combine nanofabrication labs with ultra-high vacuum manufacturing to offer wafer fabrication for quantum technology vendors. “Europe’s quantum ambitions depend on our ability to turn scientific excellence into industrial capability,” says Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, as the facility aims to strengthen the continent’s position in the competitive global quantum landscape.
Quantum Foundry Copenhagen: Scaling European Chip Manufacturing
The Novo Nordisk Foundation is directing over DKK 2.9 billion (EUR 390 million) toward quantum technologies, extending its commitment with the establishment of Quantum Foundry Copenhagen and a new 5,300 m² chip fabrication facility. This substantial financial commitment signals a diversification of funding sources for advanced quantum technology, traditionally dominated by public sector investment and venture capital. The facility’s creation directly addresses a critical bottleneck in European quantum development: the ability to translate research into scalable manufacturing processes.
This ambition extends beyond simply creating chips; the company aims to build production lines and cultivate a sustainable deep-tech industry capable of shaping the future of quantum technology. The facility’s proximity to the Foundation’s quantum program is intended to support talent development and accelerate the timeline for building Denmark’s first fully functional fault-tolerant quantum computer before 2034.

Novo Nordisk Foundation’s DKK 2.9 Billion Investment in Quantum Ecosystems
Quantum Foundry Copenhagen intends to supply Europe with advanced quantum computing processors, establishing a direct link between research and industrial production. The facility, encompassing 5,300 m², represents a substantial physical investment in European quantum manufacturing capacity and is owned by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the company says.
This new facility builds upon the Foundation’s existing commitment of over DKK 2.9 billion (EUR 390 million) to quantum technologies, including the Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Programme at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. The Foundation views this as an important step in translating scientific excellence into industrial capability, addressing a key bottleneck in European quantum development.
The establishment of Quantum Foundry Copenhagen also received support from Danish government officials, who see it as strengthening both research and manufacturing within the country. “With today’s announcement, we are once again strengthening quantum research, innovation, and manufacturing in Denmark, creating even greater opportunities for Danish companies,” a representative stated, adding that the facility provides a solid foundation for Denmark and Europe to become global leaders in quantum chips. The facility’s creation is expected to have significant benefits for current and future generations.
