Elizabeth Goldschmidt, already serving as Associate Director, has been named the next Director of the Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST), indicating a planned succession in quantum research. The Grainger College of Engineering announced the appointment, recognizing Goldschmidt’s vital role in expanding quantum initiatives across the campus; her research centers on “atom-like emitters in solids” as a platform for quantum experiments. “I’m thrilled to take over leadership of IQUIST at a time when there is so much excitement about quantum technologies,” said Goldschmidt, who will direct the center’s strategy and milestones. The transition will see Goldschmidt replace outgoing Director Brian DeMarco, who has led IQUIST for nearly four years and also served as Chief Technology Officer of the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park.
Goldschmidt’s research portfolio centers on experimental quantum optics and atomic physics, specifically leveraging “atom-like emitters in solids” as the physical foundation for quantum experiments; this focus underscores a concrete technological approach within the broader field of quantum information science. Affiliated with multiple research hubs including the Materials Research Lab and the Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Lab, Goldschmidt’s expertise spans both physics and electrical and computer engineering, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of quantum technology development. Dean Rashid Bashir noted DeMarco’s contributions to fostering opportunities in Quantum Science and Technology, setting the stage for Goldschmidt to build upon this momentum. Goldschmidt’s dedication to ensuring the University remains a leader in the field is evident in her vision for IQUIST’s role in both research breakthroughs and workforce development.

DeMarco’s involvement extended to the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE), further solidifying Illinois’ position within the regional quantum ecosystem; “He has been instrumental in helping us establish our presence in Chicago via the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park,” noted Bashir. This dual role highlights a strategic effort to bridge the gap between fundamental research and the development of a quantum industry hub. DeMarco’s contributions are acknowledged as foundational to these efforts, having laid the groundwork for continued growth and innovation in quantum science and technology, and his ongoing affiliation with the NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute Hybrid Quantum Architectures and Networks ensures continued engagement with research.
He has been instrumental in helping us establish our presence in Chicago via the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park (IQMP) and has been serving as its CTO, to his involvement in the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE) and including the many opportunities that continue to arise in Quantum Science and Technology.
