Thirty students are now experiencing particle physics at CERN, having won a national competition as part of the fifth edition of the Art&Science Across Italy project. The masterclass is a collaboration between the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), CERN, and the University of Naples Federico II, and builds on a program that has engaged approximately 5,000 students from 146 Italian schools.
These students created over 800 artworks interpreting scientific concepts through artistic expression. This initiative connects young people with scientific research by valuing individual talents and interests, fostering a blend of science, art, and creativity.
Fifth Art&Science Masterclass Launches at CERN with INFN Collaboration
The fifth edition of the Art&Science Across Italy masterclass commenced at CERN this week, offering an immersive experience for 30 students selected through a national competition. Participants are visiting key locations within CERN’s facilities, gaining firsthand exposure to major particle physics experiments and engaging in specialized seminars and workshops designed to connect scientific research with artistic expression. Organizers designed the week to foster collaboration and networking among students who share a passion for both disciplines, extending beyond formal scientific and educational activities.
The project interprets scientific themes through artistic mediums, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding in new ways. Approximately 5,000 students from 146 schools across Italy contributed over 800 artworks during the 2024-2026 edition, and their work was showcased in 16 local exhibitions before a national competition determined the masterclass attendees.
The program’s two-year structure begins with seminars, workshops, and visits to scientific museums and laboratories. This culminates in a creative phase where students, working in groups, produce art inspired by the scientific topics explored. To date, the initiative has engaged over 16,000 students from 15 Italian regions, facilitated by researchers from INFN sections and participating universities.
