Professor Subir Sachdev from Harvard has won the 2024 PROSE award in the category of chemistry, physics, astronomy, and cosmology for his book “Quantum Phases of Matter“. The awards are divided into 41 categories, including Biological and Life Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences and Mathematics, and Social Sciences. This year’s awards were described as highly competitive by the program’s chief juror, Nigel Fletcher-Jones.

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) has acknowledged exceptional contributions in professional and scholarly publishing since 1976 through the Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) Awards. The awards are divided into 41 categories, covering various disciplines including Biological and Life Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences and Mathematics, and Social Sciences. According to Nigel Fletcher-Jones, the program’s chief juror, the 2024 PROSE Awards saw a high level of competition, reflecting the diverse range of high-quality scholarly works available to readers.
The 2024 PROSE Awards: A Competitive Year
The PROSE Awards, organized by the Association of American Publishers (AAP), annually recognize significant contributions in scholarly publishing. The awards are divided into 41 categories, with the winners eligible for the next level of PROSE honors: the Awards for Excellence, which will be announced in the coming weeks.
The four super-categories for the Awards for Excellence are Biological and Life Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences and Mathematics, and Social Sciences. Once these four accolades have been conferred, one will receive the PROSE Awards’ highest honor, the prestigious R.R. Hawkins Award.
Syreeta Swann, AAP’s chief operating officer, commented on the high standard of scholarly works in the 2024 PROSE Awards, stating that the finalists and category award winners illustrate the extraordinary depth, breadth, and complexity of scholarly authorship and publishing.
The 2024 PROSE Awards: Category Winners
The 2024 PROSE Awards recognized scholarly works across multiple disciplines. In the Biological and Life Sciences category, the Nursing and Allied Health Services award went to Leadership in Practice: Essentials for Public Health and Healthcare Leaders by Susan Helm-Murtagh, DrPH, and Paul C. Erwin, MD, DrPH.
In the Social Sciences category, the award for Architecture-Urban Planning was given to In the Land of the Patriarchs: Design and Contestation in West Bank Settlements by Noam Shoked. The Business, Finance, and Management award went to Sovereign Funds: How the Communist Party of China Finances Its Global Ambitions by Zongyuan Zoe Liu.
In the Physical Science and Mathematics category, the Computing and Information Sciences award was given to Data Science in Context: Foundations, Challenges, Opportunities by Alfred Z. Spector, Peter Norvig, Chris Wiggins, and Jeannette M. Wing. Subir Sachdev gave the award for Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and Cosmology to Quantum Phases of Matter.
The 2024 PROSE Awards: Recognizing Excellence in Humanities and E-Products
In the Humanities category, the award for Art Exhibitions went to Seeing Race Before Race: Visual Culture and the Racial Matrix in the Premodern World by Noémie Ndiaye and Lia Markey. The award for Single Volume was given to The Oxford Handbook of Indigenous Sociology by Maggie Walter, Tahu Kukutai, Angela A. Gonzales, and Robert Henry. The award for Textbooks went to Dynamics of Planetary Systems by Scott Tremaine.
