Singapore and Luxembourg seek closer ties in quantum and AI

Luxembourg is Singapore’s largest European Union investor, and that established financial relationship is now expanding into new technological frontiers. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced deepened cooperation between the two nations in quantum technology, artificial intelligence, and space. Luxembourg opened its first resident embassy in Singapore two months before the visit. “Our economic ties have flourished,” Wong said. This strengthened partnership also aims to bolster economic links between ASEAN and the European Union.

Luxembourg Investment Solidifies Singapore’s EU Economic Ties

This two-way flow of capital predates the recent strengthening of ties, establishing a firm base for expanded collaboration in emerging technologies. Speaking at the Official Lunch Hosted in Honour of Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Wong said the two sides could also work together to strengthen economic and institutional links between ASEAN and the European Union, positioning the partnership as a bridge between regional blocs.

Income Insurance’s commitment of S$528 million to climate investments further reinforces this focus, contributing towards a S$1 billion climate transition financing target. “Our economic ties have flourished,” said Wong, acknowledging the established foundation upon which these new initiatives are being built and suggesting continued growth in the years ahead.

Singapore-Luxembourg Collaboration Expands to Quantum, AI, and Space Tech

Luxembourg currently stands as the largest EU investor in Singapore, while Singapore represents Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU, according to Wong. Beyond technology, both nations expressed support for open trade and international collaboration, suggesting a broader alignment of economic principles. Concord New Energy reported an 11% rise in output during August, driven by a 13.8% increase in wind-generated power. These developments suggest the strengthened Singapore-Luxembourg ties are occurring within a wider context of evolving regional economic priorities and a growing focus on sustainability initiatives.
