Paladin Capital Group will establish office space within Maryland’s 150-acre Discovery Center, physically embedding the investment firm alongside quantum startups, research institutions, and state agencies. The multi-stage investor, dedicated to quantum technologies since 2022, joins the Capital of Quantum initiative as it launches the next phase of development with the new Discovery District, the company says.
“It is critical for companies at this stage to have industry guidance, access to customers, and, most importantly, the capital to take their business to the next stage,” said Chris Steed, Chief Investment Officer and Managing Director of Paladin Capital Group. Through the partnership, Paladin aims to coordinate investment and support the region’s growing quantum ecosystem.
Paladin Capital Group Joins Maryland’s Capital of Quantum Initiative
Paladin Capital Group will engage directly with quantum research at the University of Maryland, extending its investment strategy beyond financial support to include active participation in the innovation process. The firm’s commitment, beginning in 2022, predates the recent push from Maryland Governor Wes Moore and the launch of the Discovery District, signaling an early recognition of the field’s potential, according to Capital of Quantum. This proactive stance positions Paladin to evaluate startups originating within the Capital of Quantum initiative and provide entrepreneurship guidance to founders in the emerging ecosystem.
The 150-acre Discovery Center will physically house Paladin’s office space, fostering a level of coordination not typically seen with purely financial investors. Paladin intends to share insights derived from its global network and business interactions, aiming to accelerate the development of quantum technologies. This venture intends to provide all three elements, supporting the next generation of quantum entrepreneurs.
Maryland’s Capital of Quantum, a public-private partnership targeting $1 billion in investments, aims to establish the region as a global leader in quantum information science and technology. Dr. Corey Stanbaugh, Director of Capital of Quantum, emphasized the importance of investor involvement, stating, “We are launching the Discovery Center to create an environment where researchers, developing companies, and entrepreneurs can share a communal space with top tier investors, like Paladin, who have the experience and industry knowledge to help turn ideas into reality and offer guidance and capital to help these companies thrive.” Paladin’s Christopher Steed will also join the Capital of Quantum’s Advisory Board, further solidifying the firm’s commitment to the initiative and its role in shaping the future of quantum technology. Paladin will support tech leadership development by engaging graduate students to work at the Discovery Center.
