Ground State Ventures has led a $1.4 million pre-seed round for Arq Quantum Technologies, indicating early investor confidence in the development of quantum internet infrastructure. The Barcelona-based company, a recent spinout, reports achieving the first transmission of light-matter entanglement over tens of kilometers of fiber within a metro network, a critical step toward practical long-distance quantum communication. Arq Quantum Technologies aims to build the foundational telecommunication hardware necessary to connect quantum computers and sensors, creating a network for distributing resources unavailable to classical technology. “Having them on board gives us much more confidence in going forward,” says co-founder Samuele Grandi, referring to the support of Ground State Ventures and their extensive network within the quantum ecosystem.

The envisioned quantum internet will not compete with conventional networks for bandwidth, but instead facilitate applications like connecting geographically separated quantum computers, allowing users to expand processing capacity while maintaining secure connections. Beyond computation, the technology could also enhance secure communication and optimization algorithms leveraging the unique properties of quantum entanglement.

The venture firm’s experience within the quantum ecosystem, coupled with its broader network of telecommunications contacts, is expected to accelerate the development and potential commercialization of Arq’s quantum repeater technology.
