UK Government Accelerates Post-Quantum Cryptography Migration Efforts With Extensive New Report

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is urging all sectors to migrate to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) as soon as possible. This national technology change program aims to mitigate significant potential cyber risks associated with the transition.

To support this effort, the NCSC will accredit a small group of PQC consultancies by March 2025 and test projects within the government focusing on discovery activities such as understanding cryptography usage in systems and suppliers. The center will also provide tailored advice to sectors of national importance to facilitate a smooth transition to PQC.

The UK has a world-class reputation in cyber, and we are determined to stay one step ahead – remaining alive to the threats for the UK while embracing the benefits of the digital future.

The Rt Hon Pat McFadden MP Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations

This technology change promises major opportunities, including improved secure design and management, but requires careful planning and execution. Organizations should focus on activities that underpin PQC migration, such as clear system auditing, rationalizing services, and building easily updatable systems. The NCSC’s efforts will help the UK industry navigate this critical transition.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is urging organizations to start planning for the migration to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) as soon as possible. This is a critical step in ensuring the security of digital systems and data in the face of emerging quantum computing threats.

The transition to PQC is not just about cryptography; it’s a national technology change program with significant potential cyber risks. However, if done correctly, it also presents major opportunities for improving overall system design and management.

To support this effort, the NCSC plans to:

  1. Accredit a small group of PQC consultancies by March 2025.
  2. Run test projects within government, focusing on discovery activities such as understanding where and how cryptography is used in systems.
  3. Refine their broader offer to UK industry and provide tailored advice to sectors of national importance.

The NCSC emphasizes that secure migration to PQC requires a range of activities, including:

  1. Clear system auditing
  2. Rationalizing services
  3. Building systems that can be easily updated in the future
  4. Growing new technical skills

These efforts will support PQC migration and contribute to broader secure design and management practices.

This chapter highlights the importance of proactive planning and collaboration across sectors to address the challenges posed by emerging quantum computing threats. By working together, we can ensure a more secure digital future for all.

The ransomware attack on Synnovis, and the impact this had on thousands of procedures and appointments across six NHS trusts, illustrates why – in our increasingly interconnected world – we must remain ahead of the threat.”

As the Official Quantum Dog (or hound) by role is to dig out the latest nuggets of quantum goodness. There is so much happening right now in the field of technology, whether AI or the march of robots. But Quantum occupies a special space. Quite literally a special space. A Hilbert space infact, haha! Here I try to provide some of the news that might be considered breaking news in the Quantum Computing space.
