SEALSQ highlights the inclusion of its subsidiary IC’Alps’ custom ASICs in the DeviceMed Buyer’s Guide 2026-2027, signaling industry recognition for specialized low-power design work in the medical device space. Since 2018, IC’Alps has developed custom electronic solutions for applications ranging from smart ultrasound probes to brain-computer interfaces, areas demanding both miniaturization and robust security, the company says.
SEALSQ acquired IC’Alps in August 2025 to bolster its semiconductor and cybersecurity portfolio, adding ISO 13485-certified design capabilities. “Medical devices increasingly depend on custom electronics that deliver high performance while consuming very little power, as few as nanowatts,” said Carlos Moreira, Chairman and CEO of SEALSQ.
IC’Alps’ Custom ASIC Design for Medical Technology
Since 2018, the Grenoble-based subsidiary has focused on developing custom electronic solutions for a diverse range of medical applications, including brain-computer interfaces, a rapidly evolving area demanding both performance and minimal energy consumption. These ASICs are engineered to address the critical needs of implantable cardiac devices, Holter monitors and advanced X-Ray equipment, where size, reliability, and power efficiency are paramount.
The acquisition of IC’Alps in August 2025 added ISO 13485-certified custom ASIC design capabilities, strengthening the parent company’s position in the medical device market and providing a platform to integrate advanced chip design with cybersecurity expertise. This strategic move addresses the increasing need for secure, connected medical devices, a growing concern as healthcare becomes more reliant on data transmission and remote monitoring.
The company’s partnership with Miraex, finalized June 2, 2026, further bolsters its capabilities through the acquisition of Miraex’s thin film lithium tantalate photonic integrated circuit platform. IC’Alps’ expertise lies in designing integrated circuits tailored to the specific requirements of each product, working closely with medical device developers to meet demanding standards for performance, power efficiency and integration.
“Every medical application presents a different engineering challenge,” said Jean-Luc Triouleyre, Managing Director and Co-Founder of IC’Alps. “Our teams work closely with customers to design integrated circuits that meet demanding requirements for performance, power efficiency and integration while complying with stringent quality standards such as the ISO 13485 and ISO 14971.” This collaborative approach extends to navigating evolving regulatory requirements, including AFNOR Spec 2311, and addressing the growing cybersecurity demands in connected Active Implantable Medical Devices, or AIMDs.
Carlos Moreira, Chairman and CEO, emphasized the importance of this integrated approach, stating, “IC’Alps brings specialized design expertise to this field and helps customers develop technology tailored to the therapies their devices support. Importantly, IC’Alps also provides a platform to combine advanced custom-chip design with our security expertise as connected medical devices face increasing cybersecurity requirements.” The company’s commitment to security is further demonstrated by its success in passing a NIST test for quantum-resistant security on September 24, 2026, and its expansion of its Quantum Highway to nine linked hubs across Europe and the United States on September 9, 2026. IC’Alps’ 90+ engineers specialize in analogic, digital and mixed-signal circuits, working with technologies ranging from mature 0.18 µm processes down to advanced 1.8 nm nodes, and using multiple foundries including TSMC, GlobalFoundries and Foundry.
This broad expertise allows the company to address a wide range of medical applications, from smart ultrasound probes to intracranial pressure monitoring systems, according to the company. The company’s certifications, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485:2016 and EN 9100:2018, demonstrate its commitment to quality and reliability, essential attributes for medical-grade electronics, the company says. The continued adoption of remote monitoring, connected-care platforms, and implantable technologies is expected to further drive demand for IC’Alps’ specialized ASIC design capabilities, positioning it as a key player in the evolving medical electronics landscape.
