Quantum Delta NL unveils its first ‘House of Quantum’ after getting €615 million in April 2022.

House Of Quantum In Netherlands

Quantum Delta NL, a public-private organization, located in the Netherlands, has announced the opening of the first ‘House of Quantum’ site in Delft, considered to be the world’s first national quantum campus, consisting of many multi-tenant buildings for quantum firms around the Netherlands.

“With these investments, we are building a national quantum campus that connects to partner locations in Europe. Each location will have its specific footprint, reflecting the needs of the local quantum players in each hub. The first two locations in Delft (just down the street from the TU Delft Campus) are mainly geared towards startups working on hardware developments and related electronics. It offers plug-and-play fridges, workstations, modular office space, meeting facilities and a members-only Mediterranean-style restaurant. Related initiatives from across the Quantum Delta NL programme will also find their way into the building.”

The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy awarded Quantum Delta NL’s growth program €615 million in April to power the expansion of quantum technologies.

Quantum Delta NL aims to make quantum networks, computers, and simulators more accessible, lowering the barrier to creation and testing. The programs provide a unified purpose by bringing together multiple technologies and action lines, ecosystem actors, and research and user groups.

What we know about the House of Quantum

“We’re still in the early days, but we can’t wait to see the first building flourish and to support the exciting quantum initiatives throughout the ecosystem such as the Centre for Quantum & Society, training and learning centres and field lab projects.”

Shahar Graf, operational lead of House of Quantum

House of Quantum memberships are available to local and international businesses, investors, and academics that want to work, meet and collaborate on tomorrow’s quantum technologies while also growing their business. The Dutch Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Micky Adriaansens, formally opened the building during an event attended by, among others, the Special Envoy for Techleap.nl, Constantijn van Oranje, founders, investors, and educational institutions such as TU Delft.

“Quantum technology is a promising field of technology and the Netherlands has world-leading research facilities. Now is the time to convert our academic lead into economic activity. Fruitful public-private cooperation like The House of Quantum plays a central role in this process. Here, all blood groups and disciplines from the ecosystem come together to accelerate the application of quantum technology.”

MICKY ADRIAANSENSm, Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy

According to Quantum Delta NL, enterprises developing technology in this early stage of the quantum economy require offices and top-tier lab facilities, which can be prohibitively expensive to build separately. The government is investing across the country as part of the Quantum Delta NL-led national quantum technology program, particularly in Eindhoven, Amsterdam, and Twente.

The first location in Delft is already open for business, and two more will follow, beginning with a building on the same property in 2023. More places will be added between 2023 and 2026.

“There is no doubt that quantum technologies will have a profound impact on the world, transforming information and communication technology systems to deliver benefits for society as a whole. The arrival of the House of Quantum demonstrates the Netherlands’ long-term commitment to the advancement of this technology through science and entrepreneurship.”

Constantijn van Oranje, Special Envoy Techleap.nl

Workspaces and cutting-edge labs and testbeds for quantum computing, quantum networks, and quantum sensing will be housed solely in the main building, which has been named Europe’s smartest 12,000 square “quantum metres.” This location will be built by the engineering firms Deerns and Aronsohn and the architecture firm Cepezed and will open in 2025.

”The Dutch quantum companies are laying the ground for the global value chain of quantum technology; where science and innovation go hand in hand with business. With these new buildings, Quantum Delta NL is providing us with the physical space necessary to further execute this mission. Already today, this makes the Dutch ecosystem a renowned international hub for collaboration and innovation.”

Niels Bultink, CEO Qblox

With the first House of Quantum site already up and running, overseas startups, SMEs, and businesses are welcome to join. Businesses can join in coworking spaces and community memberships in addition to opening offices or laboratories. There are also opportunities for larger corporations to sponsor the House of Quantum.
