D-Wave wins up to $100M from US to build quantum systems

D-Wave Quantum will receive up to $100 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce through the CHIPS and Science Act to fund advancements in both its quantum annealing and gate-model technologies; the company states it is the only company developing both types of quantum computing platforms. The funding will support development of a 100,000-qubit annealing system intended for applications ranging from optimization to artificial intelligence, alongside a 10,000-qubit gate-model system designed to achieve 100 logical qubits capable of over one million operations. “We’re grateful to the U.S. government for this award to D-Wave and for the leadership it is demonstrating in advancing quantum innovation,” said Dr. Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave.

CHIPS Act Funding to Advance D-Wave’s Dual-Platform Technology

D-Wave plans to construct a 100,000-qubit annealing system with this funding, specifically targeting applications including optimization problems, advanced materials simulation, and artificial intelligence development. This large qubit count represents a performance goal beyond current capabilities, positioning the company to address increasingly complex computational challenges, D-Wave says. Dr. Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave, explained that the Administration has made clear that U.S. quantum leadership requires both breakthrough research and the ability to scale, commercialize, and manufacture these technologies.

As a condition of receiving the funds, the Department of Commerce will acquire a minority, non-controlling equity stake in D-Wave, aligning public and private sector interests in quantum technology development. These efforts directly address the CHIPS and Science Act’s objectives by bolstering U.S. technological competitiveness and fostering innovation in a critical field.

The Administration has made clear that U.S. quantum leadership will require not only breakthrough research, but also the ability to scale, commercialize and manufacture these technologies.
