Cesga And Fujitsu Partner To Launch Quantum Knowledge Center In Spain Built With British Tech From Oqc

CESGA and Fujitsu have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a quantum knowledge centre in Galicia, Spain, aiming to accelerate joint research in quantum computing technologies. CESGA will install a powerful quantum computer developed by Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) for researchers across Spain. The partnership will collaborate with Galician universities and the Spanish National Research Council to boost quantum technology development. CESGA will build a cluster system on OQC’s 32 qubit quantum computer, combined with Fujitsu’s 34 qubit quantum computer simulator. Operations are set to begin in mid-September 2023.

Quantum Knowledge Center in Galicia, Spain

CESGA and Fujitsu have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a quantum knowledge center in Galicia, Spain. The center aims to accelerate joint research using quantum computing technologies and promote the development of the quantum industry on both regional and international levels. Operations are set to begin in mid-September 2023.

As part of this plan, CESGA will install one of the world’s most powerful quantum computers, developed by Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC), to make the technology accessible to researchers across Spain. The installation marks a significant milestone in the quantum technology industry. Fujitsu and CESGA will collaborate closely with Galician universities and the Spanish National Research Council’s research community to boost the development and research of quantum technologies, attract talent and investment to Galicia, and promote the use of quantum technologies to address global societal challenges.

CESGA’s Quantum Computer and Fujitsu’s Quantum Simulator

The first step of the new partnership involves CESGA building a cluster system on OQC’s world-leading 32 qubit quantum computer. This will be combined with Fujitsu’s 34 qubit quantum computer simulator on the FX 700, the “FUJITSU Server PRIMERGY” series, and the “FUJITSU Supercomputer PRIMEHPC FX700”, which is equipped with the same A64FX CPU as in the supercomputer “Fugaku”. CESGA will also adopt Fujitsu’s quantum-inspired Digital Annealer, with plans to start operations in mid-September 2023.

As CESGA’s technology partner, Fujitsu will contribute its expertise in quantum computing, acquired through its ongoing development of innovative quantum and quantum-related technologies, including hardware and software.

Real-World Use Cases with Galician Companies

To kick-start the initiative, Fujitsu and CESGA plan to run three real-world use cases with high-profile Galician companies, leveraging Fujitsu’s Digital Annealer to demonstrate the potential and practical benefits of quantum and quantum-related technologies. This collaboration aims to boost Galicia’s production of new developments and research in quantum hardware and software, helping to establish research groups in a world-class leading position and shape the future of quantum computing.

Galicia’s Strategic Investments in Quantum Technology

This partnership marks an exciting moment for Galicia, as the region has been making strategic investments in quantum technology. CESGA has chosen Fujitsu as its partner to create an international quantum technology hub in Galicia, alongside OQC to deliver the underpinning world-leading technology. This combination will provide the necessary resources for creating knowledge, attracting talent, and securing future investment for the region.
