IIT Madras chip startup Discovered Materials gets $9 million in seed funding

Advait Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, both alumni of IIT Madras, have founded Discovered Materials, a startup that recently secured $9 million (Rs 85 crore) in seed funding led by Lightspeed India Partners. The company is targeting a critical challenge in artificial intelligence development: AI chips generate heat exceeding 140 watts per square centimetre. Discovered Materials will use AI agents to discover new materials for semiconductor chips, initially focusing on thermal management solutions across the entire semiconductor stack.

Discovered Materials Secures $9 Million Seed Funding Led by Lightspeed

AI chip thermal challenges are driving demand for novel materials, as evidenced by a recent $9 million seed funding round secured by Discovered Materials. The seed funding round was led by Lightspeed India Partners, with substantial participation from Y Combinator, Peak XV Partners, and several prominent angel investors including Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram, and Thariq Shihipar.

This investor base signals strong early confidence in the company’s approach to materials discovery. Discovered Materials is developing AI agents designed to accelerate the identification of materials with optimal properties for semiconductor applications, initially concentrating on those that improve heat dissipation.

The company’s technology extends beyond thermal management, with ambitions to discover materials across the entire semiconductor stack. The founders’ connection to IIT Madras appears to be a key element of the company’s origins and early success; both Sridhar and Ramdas are alumni of the institution, suggesting a strong foundation in engineering and technology.

The company believes that a proactive approach to materials science is essential for continued progress in artificial intelligence, and the team aims to fundamentally alter the materials discovery process. Traditional materials discovery is slow, expensive, and often relies on chance; by employing AI agents, the company hopes to significantly reduce both the time and cost associated with identifying and validating new materials.
