Synopsys and OpenAI have signed a multi-year agreement to co-develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized artificial intelligence model designed to reshape semiconductor creation. The partnership combines OpenAI’s advanced AI with Synopsys’ electronic design automation tools, aiming to accelerate chip design workflows and optimize performance, the company says. “The future of semiconductor engineering requires dramatic acceleration of the chip design process without compromising PPA or first-time-right silicon,” said Sassine Ghazi, president and CEO of Synopsys. The companies will share revenue from GPT-Synopsys, reflecting a substantial commitment to this collaborative venture.
GPT-Synopsys: OpenAI AI Integrates with Synopsys EDA Tools
GPT-Synopsys establishes a shared revenue framework, an unusual arrangement signaling a high degree of financial commitment from both OpenAI and Synopsys to this collaboration. The companies will jointly benefit from sales of the specialized AI model, reflecting an investment beyond a typical product launch and indicating expectations for long-term returns. This financial alignment emphasises the belief that AI-driven chip design represents a significant market opportunity, and both entities are willing to share both the risk and the reward.
The newly developed GPT-Synopsys model is designed to function as a native expert within Synopsys’ electronic design automation tools, going beyond simply connecting AI models to existing software. This integration allows the AI to not only run chip-design workflows but also to interpret outputs and iteratively optimize designs, mirroring the actions of experienced engineers.
Engineers can delegate design objectives, such as power, performance and area optimization, to agents running the tools and reviewing the verified outcomes. Early engagements with leading semiconductor customers are already underway, testing the capabilities of GPT-Synopsys on real-world design challenges. The service offering will bundle compute resources, the AI model itself and necessary licenses, ensuring a streamlined experience for users.
Synopsys emphasizes that customer design data will remain protected through enterprise-grade security measures, including encryption and configurable retention policies. “Together with OpenAI, we’re bringing advanced intelligence to chip design to help more companies develop and accelerate advanced silicon, while maintaining the rigor and trust required for manufacturing success,” Ghazi added.
OpenAI’s contribution extends beyond simply licensing its AI technology. OpenAI is using its most advanced technology to improve the systems that power AI, according to OpenAI. “We’re using our most advanced technology to improve the systems that power AI,” said Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI.
“With Synopsys, we’re bringing that work to chip design, helping engineers explore more designs and get to a working chip faster. By helping them build better chips, we can build better AI and bring it to more people.” GPT-Synopsys will operate on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure and integrate deeply with Synopsys ai and the Synopsys Autopilot agentic AI platform, solidifying the partnership’s commitment to a unified design environment.
