IonQ Commits $15M to Catalyze Tennessee Quantum Ecosystem

IonQ is embedding the world’s first commercial Quantum Memory within an operational fiber optic network in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The company and EPB, Chattanooga’s energy and communications solutions company, will jointly fund the new Tennessee Quantum Communications Research Center with a five-year, $15 million commitment from IonQ.

“Interconnecting quantum computers at multiple locations and linking them directly to end users lays the foundation for the full suite of applications of quantum communications,” said IonQ Chairman and CEO Niccolo de Masi. This research and development lab aims to build a local quantum talent ecosystem and accelerate the commercialization of quantum technologies in the Tennessee Valley.

The center’s location is strategic; EPB’s existing fiber infrastructure provides the essential test bed for translating research into practical applications. The core function of Quantum Memory is to reliably share quantum information across extended distances, a critical hurdle in developing interconnected quantum systems suitable for real-world commercial use. This is about enabling a future Quantum Internet capable of supporting entirely new classes of applications, not simply about faster data transfer. The R&D lab will be staffed by IonQ scientists, focusing on advancing the capabilities of Quantum Memories and accelerating their commercial deployment.

EPB’s role extends beyond providing the network infrastructure; the company will serve as the primary commercialization partner, identifying and developing use-cases for both the public and private sectors within the Tennessee Valley region. “EPB has been an exceptional partner throughout this process, and we are proud to invest in a center that will advance quantum communications while creating new opportunities for Chattanooga and the broader Tennessee region,” explained IonQ’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer, Inder Singh.

The projected economic impact is substantial, with estimates suggesting a total benefit of up to two to three times the initial $15 million investment, and the creation of approximately two dozen jobs. Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly stated that IonQ’s $15 million investment is a historic turning point, establishing the first Quantum Communications R&D center in the United States in the city, underscoring the city’s commitment to becoming a leader in the quantum era. The center builds upon existing collaboration between EPB and IonQ through the EPB Quantum Center, further solidifying Chattanooga’s position as a national hub for quantum innovation.
