New Indian Quantum Hub funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) cements Indian commitment to Quantum Technology

India is sadly coping with the challenges of the Corona Virus, but aside from those challenges it is showing its serious commitment to Quantum technologies with a new quantum technology hub.

Named I-Hub Quantum Technology Foundation (I-Hub QTF), the hub will host more than 20 national-level research institutes — select IITs (India’s renowned institutes), Indian Institute of Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, among many others. The work will head towards development of novel computing and quantum materials, sensors, quantum communication devices and systems.

“I-Hub QTF will help India carry out cutting-edge research and development in a field that is at the frontier of the new technologies that will revolutionise our way of living over the next few decades,”

Last year, quantum technology has been given a massive boost in India’s budget, receiving 80 billion rupees (over US$1.1 billion) to be spent over five years as part of a new national quantum mission to drive India’s quantum industry. The amount is notable in that is represents a considerable spending sum – even compared to the United States which committed a similar amount in 2018 to its quantum initiative. Of course, India is still considered a developing nation and aside from the challenges of covid-19 still has numerous challenges, but the nation does have a good educational base which is likely to serve in well when it comes to addressing the Quantum market.
