ColibriTD gets €4M to expand quantum simulations for industry

ColibriTD has secured €4 million in Seed funding led by Earlybird Venture Capital, following an initial €1 million Pre-Seed investment, to expand its quantum-powered simulation platform for industry. The French company has already completed seven co-construction projects with organizations including Thales, ESA, and BMW, spanning six industrial sectors, demonstrating a move beyond research and into practical application. “Hardware may unlock quantum computing, but software determines where its value is created,” said Dr. Frédéric Du Bois-Reymond, Venture Partner at Earlybird Venture Capital, highlighting the company’s focus on the algorithm layer connecting quantum capability to enterprise problems.

H-DES Algorithm Solves PDEs for Multiphysics Simulation

ColibriTD’s core technology, H-DES, a proprietary variational quantum algorithm, directly addresses the challenge of solving partial differential equations, the mathematical foundation for modeling complex physical systems. These PDEs govern phenomena ranging from fluid dynamics to material deformation, areas where classical computing and artificial intelligence encounter limitations in precision and scalability. Unlike AI’s reliance on pattern recognition, H-DES delivers exact, physics-grounded solutions crucial for high-stakes industrial engineering applications. The company has validated this approach through seven completed co-construction projects spanning six industrial sectors, including defense, aerospace, and automotive engineering.

These were collaborations with engineering teams seeking practical solutions to real-world problems, demonstrating a shift from theoretical research to tangible industrial application, ColibriTD says. Dr. Laurent Guiraud, Cofounder and CEO of ColibriTD, explained, “When we founded ColibriTD in 2019, our vision was to move quantum computing past academic theory and deliver tangible business value to industry. Today, we have reached an inflection point.” IBM recognizes the potential of solving PDEs with quantum computers, identifying it as an area for near-term benefits.

ColibriTD’s QUICK-PDE Qiskit Function is currently available within the Qiskit Function Catalog for IBM Quantum Premium and Flex Plan users, expanding access to their algorithm. This compatibility extends beyond IBM; the platform also functions across AWS Braket, IQM, IONQ, and Quobly, positioning ColibriTD to capitalize on advancements from multiple hardware providers. Earlybird Venture Capital’s Dr. Du Bois-Reymond stated, “ColibriTD has built a differentiated software platform with the scientific credibility and industrial traction to become the decision layer for quantum applications.”

€4M Seed Round Fuels ColibriTD’s Industrial Co-Constructions

The French company intends to deploy the funds across research and development of its Hybrid Differential Equation Solver, known as H-DES, and to bolster recruitment of both quantum researchers and engineers specializing in industrial applications. This expansion aims to support growing client engagements and forge new partnerships, preparing for larger-scale deployments of its quantum simulation platform. This hardware agnosticism positions the company to capitalize on advancements from multiple quantum computing developers, rather than being reliant on a single technology.

Hardware may unlock quantum computing, but software determines where its value is created. ColibriTD has built a differentiated software platform with the scientific credibility and industrial traction to become the decision layer for quantum applications.

Ivy Delaney has been working with neural networks and machine learning since the mid-nineties, back when a couple of hidden layers and a long afternoon of training counted as ambitious. She has watched the field go from academic curiosity to the thing quietly running underneath everything, and she brings that long view to quantum computing. For Quantum Zeitgeist she covers the ground where the two fields meet. That means quantum machine learning and the variational algorithms it leans on, and it also means the less glamorous but more interesting story of classical machine learning already doing real work inside quantum machines, decoding error-correcting codes, calibrating noisy hardware and learning the error models that simulators depend on. She writes about the hardware those algorithms have to run on too, and about the post-quantum cryptography scramble that the same hardware has set off. Her stories typically start with the paper, whether that is peer-reviewed work, conference proceedings or an arXiv preprint, with the source linked so you can hold a claim up against the research it came from. She is unimpressed by benchmarks that will not say what they beat, and by demonstrations that only work in the press release.
