SEALSQ’s chips will anchor a secure quantum network

SEALSQ Corp and WISeKey International Holding are expanding the SEALSQ-WISeKey Quantum Highway, a network designed to link sovereign technology centers across Switzerland, Spain, the US, India, and ultimately, into space. A major component is a new Post-Quantum Semiconductor and Cybersecurity Center planned for the Canton of Jura, Switzerland, with a projected investment of CHF 40-60 million and the potential to create 150 qualified jobs within five years. This architecture, spanning silicon to space, aims to establish an end-to-end chain of trust for secure communications, combining SEALSQ’s semiconductor expertise with regional strengths in photonics and precision manufacturing.

Post-Quantum Semiconductors Anchor Integrated Silicon-to-Space Chain of Trust

This new facility aims to combine SEALSQ’s specialized expertise in post-quantum semiconductors with Jura’s established strengths in microtechnology, precision manufacturing, and industrial engineering, creating a unique hub for innovation. The center anticipates generating approximately 150 qualified jobs within five years, with potential for expansion to over 250 positions, demonstrating a concrete economic impact beyond technological advancement. SEALSQ’s strategy extends beyond terrestrial infrastructure, with plans to integrate its technologies into WISeSat, a program designed to create quantum-secure satellite communications.

The interconnected network, dubbed the SEALSQ-WISeKey Quantum Highway, is designed to avoid concentrating critical technologies in a single location, instead fostering collaboration between centers of excellence. This distributed approach enhances resilience and reduces potential single points of failure in the increasingly vital area of secure communications.

In Spain, Quantix Edge Security is developing semiconductor capabilities in Murcia, supported by a planned investment of approximately €40 million, while La Línea de la Concepción will provide an additional connection to post-quantum communications and WISeSat activities. France contributes secure-element and post-quantum semiconductor engineering through SEALSQ’s operations, complemented by the ASIC and mixed-signal design capabilities of its subsidiary, IC’ALPS, using the Grenoble technology ecosystem, the company says.

Across the Atlantic, SEALSQ’s investment in EeroQ connects the Quantum Highway with quantum computing based on electrons on helium, while collaboration with Kaynes in India intends to develop local capabilities in post-quantum semiconductor design, testing, and secure personalization. This interconnected sovereign infrastructure envisions a secure semiconductor designed in France, securely personalized in Spain, Switzerland, or India, anchored to WISeKey’s Root of Trust in Geneva, and interconnected through Swiss photonics.

This secure chain could extend into orbit through WISeSat, creating a comprehensive, globally distributed system for secure data transmission and processing. As Carlos Moreira, Founder and CEO of WISeKey and SEALSQ, commented: “The Quantum Highway is becoming the physical map of our sovereign quantum strategy.

We are connecting specialized centers rather than concentrating critical technologies in one location, creating an integrated chain of trust from semiconductor design and post-quantum security to quantum computing and space.” The Quantum Spatial Orbital Cloud (QSOC) represents the culmination of this integrated approach, combining post-quantum technologies, quantum-generated trust, and satellite connectivity to create secure orbital infrastructure, with a roadmap that contemplates up to 100 satellites. This ambitious plan aims to establish a truly global, quantum-secured communication network, capable of protecting sensitive data from both current and future threats.

The company’s objective, according to Moreira, is solidifying SEALSQ’s position as a key player in the emerging area of post-quantum security.

The Quantum Highway is becoming the physical map of our sovereign quantum strategy. We are connecting specialized centers rather than concentrating critical technologies in one location, creating an integrated chain of trust from semiconductor design and post-quantum security to quantum computing and space.

Rusty is a quantum science nerd. He's been into academic science all his life, but spent his formative years doing less academic things. Now he turns his attention to write about his passion, the quantum realm. He loves all things Quantum Physics especially. Rusty likes the more esoteric side of Quantum Computing and the Quantum world. Everything from Quantum Entanglement to Quantum Physics. Rusty thinks that we are in the 1950s quantum equivalent of the classical computing world. While other quantum journalists focus on IBM's latest chip or which startup just raised $50 million, Rusty's over here writing 3,000-word deep dives on whether quantum entanglement might explain why you sometimes think about someone right before they text you. (Spoiler: it doesn't, but the exploration is fascinating)
