Lip-Bu Tan Joins PsiQuantum Board With Decades of Tech Scaling

A significant investment in the future of quantum computing is signaled by the appointment of Lip-Bu Tan, Chief Executive Officer of Intel Corporation, to the PsiQuantum Board of Directors. Tan brings decades of experience scaling complex technologies, having previously led Cadence Design Systems to become a global leader in electronic design automation before taking the helm at Intel. This appointment coincides with internal leadership shifts at PsiQuantum; Co-Founder Jeremy O’Brien has transitioned to Executive Chairman and Victor Peng is now Interim CEO, indicating a deliberate restructuring as the company prepares for a new phase of growth. “I’ve known the PsiQuantum team for many years as an investor and have followed their progress closely,” said Lip-Bu Tan, emphasizing the company’s differentiated approach to building fault-tolerant systems manufactured at scale.

Lip-Bu Tan Appointed to PsiQuantum Board of Directors

Lip-Bu Tan, currently leading Intel Corporation as CEO, has accepted a position on the Board of Directors at PsiQuantum, a move that combines established semiconductor expertise with the developing field of quantum computing. This appointment is unusual because CEOs of major corporations seldom dedicate board-level attention to early-stage ventures, suggesting a substantial personal commitment from Tan beyond typical corporate investment strategies.

Tan’s history of scaling complex technology companies is particularly relevant for PsiQuantum, which is transitioning from research and development toward the ambitious goal of building fault-tolerant, utility-scale quantum computers. He has also served as Chairman of Walden International and as a founding managing partner of both Walden Catalyst Ventures and Celesta Capital, demonstrating a long-standing engagement with fostering innovation within the semiconductor ecosystem. “Lip-Bu has an exceptional track record of leading and guiding technology companies from start-ups to large public companies,” said Victor Peng, Interim Chief Executive Officer of PsiQuantum. “As we advance our technology and begin deployment of utility-scale, fault tolerant quantum computers, his insights on high performance computing, advanced manufacturing, ecosystems, and customer adoption will be invaluable.” O’Brien emphasized the company’s long-term vision, stating, “From day one, PsiQuantum has taken the long-term view that quantum computing must be built by leveraging the semiconductor industry,” and that Tan’s experience will “help accelerate our path to delivering on that vision.”

Silicon Photonics Platform Drives Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing

PsiQuantum’s strategy for achieving commercially viable quantum computation relies heavily on scaling its silicon photonics platform, a direction now bolstered by significant leadership changes and a notable addition to its Board of Directors. The appointment of Lip-Bu Tan, currently CEO of Intel Corporation, signals a deliberate move to leverage expertise in semiconductor manufacturing and large-scale technology deployment, critical for transitioning from research to practical application. This strategic board addition coincides with internal restructuring; Jeremy O’Brien, PsiQuantum’s Co-Founder, has transitioned to Executive Chairman, while semiconductor veteran Victor Peng now serves as Interim CEO, following his previous roles as President of AMD and CEO of Xilinx. The company’s focus on fault tolerance, achieved through a modular architecture designed for scalability, is predicated on utilizing existing semiconductor infrastructure, a philosophy Tan clearly supports.

From day one, PsiQuantum has taken the long-term view that quantum computing must be built by leveraging the semiconductor industry.
