OpenLight scales silicon photonics for AI, secures $84M funding

OpenLight has secured $84 million in publicly disclosed funding while simultaneously expanding its leadership team with Kevin Soukup from GlobalFoundries as COO and Kirk Ouellette from STMicroelectronics as Chief Strategy Officer & Interim CRO. The company is focusing on scaling 3. 2T silicon photonics manufacturing to meet the demands of AI infrastructure. “The central challenge of the industry is whether it can manufacture at the scale demanded by AI infrastructure,” stated OpenLight CEO Adam Carter, as the company transitions beyond a PDK model to full production of customer designs and reference photonic integrated circuits.

Heterogeneous InP-on-Silicon Scaling for AI Infrastructure

Soukup arrives from GlobalFoundries, while Ouellette joins from STMicroelectronics, both bringing experience in scaling semiconductor businesses beyond initial product development. This expansion includes offering wafer-level testing, burn-in services and OSAT-style manufacturing, indicating a commitment to complete production cycles for customers. The company’s focus extends to 3. This scaling effort is supported by $84 million in publicly disclosed funding, allowing OpenLight to move beyond providing photonic design kits to fabricating customer designs and reference PICs.

In a recent interview with Converge Network Digest, Carter detailed the company’s approach to volume production, NPO/CPO architectures, and wafer-level testing, all aimed at delivering high-performance silicon photonics for demanding AI applications, OpenLight says. The company’s progress is also detailed in articles appearing in Laser Focus World and DCD Magazine.
