GlobalFoundries wins $375M to build US quantum chip manufacturing

GlobalFoundries will receive $375 million over five years to expand its Quantum Technology Solutions business, a research and development award finalized with the U.S. Department of Commerce. The funding aims to bolster domestic quantum semiconductor manufacturing and establish a secure U.S. supply chain for quantum chips, moving the field beyond prototyping toward commercial production.

“This is another important milestone for Quantum Technology Solutions and our efforts to build a scalable domestic quantum manufacturing ecosystem,” said Nicholas Sergeant, vice president and general manager of Quantum Technology Solutions at GlobalFoundries. The company reports expanded engagement with customers and partners since launching the initiative.

$375M CHIPS Award Fuels GlobalFoundries’ Quantum Technology Solutions

GlobalFoundries is positioned to expand its manufacturing capabilities following a finalized agreement with the U.S. This funding specifically targets the company’s Quantum Technology Solutions (QTS) business, designed to accelerate the transition from quantum research to commercial production of semiconductor chips within the United States. The investment aims to establish a secure domestic supply chain for these advanced components, lessening reliance on international sources.

Through QTS, GlobalFoundries is concentrating research and development efforts on cryogenic CMOS technologies, advanced packaging, and heterogeneous integration, capabilities critical for scaling quantum computing applications, the company says. The company’s broader strategy includes a recently announced $300 million letter of intent with the CHIPS office to accelerate research in silicon photonics, a technology expected to be foundational for future artificial intelligence infrastructure.

GlobalFoundries views both quantum computing and optical connectivity as key elements in advanced computing systems, and is actively investing in research to solidify its role as a manufacturing partner for emerging technology innovators. This commitment reflects a broader effort to advance critical semiconductor technologies and strengthen the U.S. position in the global technology landscape.

Since launching, we have expanded engagement with customers and ecosystem partners who are leveraging GF’s R&D and manufacturing expertise to address some of the industry’s most challenging scaling requirements.
