GlobalFoundries Wins $375M to Build US Quantum Chip Supply

GlobalFoundries will receive $375 million in research and development funding over five years from the U.S. Department of Commerce to bolster domestic quantum semiconductor manufacturing. The award accelerates GlobalFoundries’ Quantum Technology Solutions business, aiming to establish a secure U.S. ecosystem for developing and producing quantum chips.

“This is another important milestone for Quantum Technology Solutions and our efforts to build a scalable domestic quantum manufacturing ecosystem,” said Nicholas Sergeant, vice president and general manager of Quantum Technology Solutions at GlobalFoundries. The funding will support research into cryogenic CMOS technologies and advanced packaging, positioning GlobalFoundries as a key foundry partner for emerging quantum applications.

$375M Award Fuels GF’s Quantum Technology Solutions Expansion

GlobalFoundries is eligible to receive up to $375 million in funding over a five-year period, contingent upon meeting pre-defined milestones detailed in a research and development agreement finalized with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS Research and Development Office. This funding directly supports the company’s Quantum Technology Solutions (QTS) business, an initiative designed to accelerate the scaling of domestic quantum semiconductor manufacturing and reinforce U.S. leadership in the rapidly evolving quantum technology sector.

The company has also recently signed a letter of intent for an additional $300 million from the CHIPS Research and Development Office to accelerate research into silicon photonics, demonstrating a broader commitment to foundational technologies for future computing infrastructure.

GlobalFoundries’ research efforts are concentrating on transitioning quantum innovation experimentation to scalable manufacturing processes, the company says. The company’s work is not limited to materials science; it also focuses on the practical challenges of moving quantum computing companies beyond prototyping and toward full-scale commercial production, according to GlobalFoundries. This focus on manufacturability is intended to address a key bottleneck in the advancement of quantum computing, and represents a tangible step toward building a robust and secure U.S. quantum supply chain, complementing GlobalFoundries’ wider initiatives to advance critical semiconductor technologies.

The company views both quantum computing and optical connectivity as foundational technologies for the future of artificial intelligence and advanced computing systems, and is strategically investing in research to strengthen its position as a trusted manufacturing partner for innovators in these fields. GlobalFoundries maintains global manufacturing operations across the United States, Europe, and Asia, serving a diverse range of high-growth markets including automotive, aerospace, data centers, and mobile devices.

Since launching, we have expanded engagement with customers and ecosystem partners who are leveraging GF’s R&D and manufacturing expertise to address some of the industry’s most challenging scaling requirements.
