Denmark And Nvidia Partner To Build Powerful Ai Supercomputer, Boosting Healthcare And Green Transition

Denmark is partnering with NVIDIA to build one of the world’s most powerful AI supercomputers to accelerate research in healthcare, life sciences, and green transition. The Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) lead the project.

Eviden, an Atos Group company, will deliver the Gefion supercomputer. The Danish Centre for AI Innovation will house the supercomputer, which is expected to be ready for pilot projects by the end of 2024. The supercomputer will be powered by NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs and interconnected using NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking.

Denmark and NVIDIA Collaborate on AI Supercomputer

Denmark has partnered with NVIDIA, a prominent technology company, to establish a national center for AI innovation. This center will house a highly advanced AI supercomputer, one of the most powerful globally. The collaboration aims to expedite research and innovation in various fields, including healthcare, life sciences, and green transition. The Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) lead the Danish side of the collaboration. The center will provide researchers from Denmark’s public and private sectors access to the NVIDIA AI supercomputer and its software platforms, training, and expertise.

The Impact of AI on Scientific Discoveries

Collaboration with NVIDIA is expected to enhance research in human and planetary health significantly. AI has provided an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate research in these areas. AI’s extreme computing power can enable positive societal transformation by aiding drug discovery, disease diagnosis, and treatment and addressing complex life science challenges. The national AI innovation center, which has resulted from the collaboration with NVIDIA, can help Denmark’s researchers and innovators advance their work.

Denmark’s Strategic Position in Technology

The Danish government is committed to enhancing Denmark’s global standing in cutting-edge technology and data resources. Investing in transformative technologies like supercomputers is expected to boost Denmark’s competitive edge on the world stage. Eviden, an Atos Group company and a European leader in advanced computing, will deliver, install, and configure the supercomputer named Gefion later in 2024. The Danish Centre for AI Innovation is expected to be ready for pilot projects before the end of the year.

The Supercomputer and Its Capabilities

Denmark’s new supercomputer, a large-scale NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD, is powered by NVIDIA H100 Tensor Core GPUs and interconnected using NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand networking. The supercomputer and collaboration with NVIDIA will enable Denmark to pursue large-scale projects in countless fields where AI is a valuable tool, as well as within AI research itself. The supercomputer will also support projects involving sensitive data, with the highest level of security and support for Danish data sovereignty.

The Future of AI-Based Research and Business Development

The Danish Centre for AI Innovation A/S, a public limited company established by the Foundation, will own and operate the supercomputer. All revenue will be reinvested in the initiative. EIFO, a minority owner, holds 15% of the shares. The center is expected to have a significant impact on AI-based research and business development in the coming years. It is also expected to impact the Danish economy and society in a broader sense. The collaboration with the Novo Nordisk Foundation aligns perfectly with EIFO’s strategic focus on AI, quantum computing, the green transition, life science, and the commercialization of research.
