Pasqal ends defense program, eyes civilian quantum support

Pasqal (Nasdaq: PSQL) will refocus its efforts on commercial quantum computing applications after meeting all technological goals in the first phase of the LSQUARE defense program. The French company, which operates the second largest fleet of complex quantum computers globally, is now responding to a request from the Secrétariat général pour l’investissement and Direction générale des entreprises to develop a research program for fault-tolerant quantum computing using its neutral-atom technology.

“We are excited about the evolution of our collaboration with the French public authorities,” said Pasqal Chief Executive Officer Dr. Wasiq Bokhari. This shift signals continued French government commitment to Pasqal as a key sovereign technology asset.

Pasqal Shifts Focus from LSQUARE Defense Program to Civilian Applications

Pasqal successfully met all technological goals within the initial phase of the LSQUARE (PROQCIMA) defense program before ending its involvement, demonstrating the decision was not due to technical shortcomings. Confirmation from the French Direction générale de l’armement (DGA) of these completed objectives allows Pasqal to redirect resources toward commercial quantum computing development, the company says. This request highlights the government’s continued commitment to Pasqal’s technological approach, recognizing the company’s capabilities and commercial progress.

Pasqal’s neutral-atom qubit technology, which uses laser light to hold single atoms, is now the focus of this new collaboration, extending beyond the scope of the PROQCIMA program. Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Palaiseau, France, the company currently has approximately 275 employees and has raised over €440 million in funding.

This refocus on commercial applications follows Pasqal’s recent financing of at least €340 million, including a €170 million private round and roughly €170 million of committed convertible financing, as well as a business combination with Bleichroeder Acquisition Corp, resulting in a Nasdaq listing as PSQL on August 28, 2026. Pasqal has also forged partnerships with organizations like CEA, CINECA, Aramco and DistriQ. According to Bokhari, this demonstrates Pasqal’s strategic importance as a sovereign technology asset for France and signals a sustained commitment to the company’s growth and innovation in the quantum computing field.

We are excited about the evolution of our collaboration with the French public authorities.
