MIT Scientists Develop AI Tool to Visualize Future Flooding Scenarios

MIT scientists have developed an innovative method that generates realistic satellite images of future flooding, helping communities visualize and prepare for approaching storms. By combining a generative artificial intelligence model with a physics-based flood model, researchers can create accurate, bird’s-eye-view images of a region, showing where flooding is likely to occur given the strength of an oncoming storm.

Led by postdoc Björn Lütjens, the team applied this method to Houston, generating satellite images depicting what certain locations around the city would look like after a storm comparable to Hurricane Harvey.
