Gradiant joins Airbus, Safran on ESA’s quantum space projects

Gradiant, a Spanish technology centre, is solidifying its position as a leading organization in quantum technologies by participating in three strategic projects with the European Space Agency. The initiatives, led by Airbus Defence and Space Spain and Safran Electronics & Defense, will develop quantum sensors designed to enhance Earth observation capabilities and secure satellite communications.

Gradiant’s ESA Partnerships Advance Quantum Space Technologies

Gradiant is contributing to the QUPIDO project, led by Safran Electronics & Defense, focused on quantum and precise navigation inter-satellite communications with data aggregation. This initiative aims to establish secure communication links between satellites, a critical step toward a resilient European space infrastructure, and highlights a growing emphasis on data management in orbit.

The project’s scope extends beyond simple transmission, incorporating data aggregation techniques to maximize the efficiency of satellite networks and deliver enhanced services. These sensors promise to significantly improve the resolution and accuracy of data gathered from space, enabling more detailed monitoring of environmental changes and resource management.

The development of these advanced sensors directly addresses the need for improved data in strategic areas like climate monitoring, disaster response, and agricultural planning, moving beyond traditional observation methods. “Our participation in these projects represents significant recognition of Gradiant’s capabilities in quantum technologies and reflects the trust that the European Space Agency and leading industrial players place in our expertise,” says Luis Pérez-Freire, Executive Director of Gradiant.

Gradiant’s commitment to quantum technologies is backed by a substantial investment of €3.5 million mobilized in research and development projects during 2025. This funding underscores the organization’s position as a key technology partner for entities seeking to integrate quantum solutions into their operations, and demonstrates a clear strategic focus on translating theoretical potential into practical applications.

The European Space Agency, founded in 2019 and headquartered in Paris, actively collaborates with companies like Gradiant to foster innovation in space-based quantum systems, with existing partnerships including Equal1, SpeQtral, and Thales Alenia Space Quantum Division, the company says. The technology centre’s involvement extends to the Cervera Quixote Network of Excellence, an organization dedicated to promoting quantum technologies for defense and security applications. This membership reinforces Gradiant’s role in bolstering technological sovereignty and strategic autonomy within both Spain and Europe.

The ESA’s portfolio of 19 patent families and 3 recent publications demonstrates its ongoing commitment to quantum research, with a particular focus on secure communications, precision navigation, and advanced scientific measurement, according to Gradiant. “Being part of these consortia allows us to contribute to the development of Europe’s future space infrastructures and strengthen our position as a leading player in quantum technologies applied to space,” Pérez-Freire added, emphasizing the long-term impact of these collaborations. These projects secure Europe’s position in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

QUPIDO & QUEENS Projects Develop Secure Satellite Communications

This initiative focuses on establishing links capable of supporting advanced synchronization and relative positioning for future space-based networks. Ground-based demonstrators will be developed as a foundation for these networks. The project addresses a key challenge in the space sector: ensuring secure and reliable communication in an increasingly congested orbital environment. The QUEENS project, also spearheaded by Safran Electronics & Defense in collaboration with Airbus and Airbus Crisa, expands on these efforts by exploring quantum entanglement distribution between satellites.

This approach aims to create intrinsically secure communication networks by using the principles of quantum mechanics. Gradiant’s role within QUEENS involves developing demonstrators to validate the feasibility of distributing quantum entanglement across space nodes, combining this with ultra-precise timing technologies, the firm reports. Successful demonstration of entanglement distribution would represent a step toward unhackable communication channels for sensitive data.

The European Space Agency’s 2026 collaboration with Equal1, for example, explores scalable quantum computing for space missions, while Honeywell Aerospace is developing a compact quantum space magnetometer with a target delivery date of 2027. The agency’s Saga mission, scheduled to utilize Quantum Key Distribution, further demonstrates its dedication to securing communications from space.
