Bull has been selected to deliver LUMI-AI, a €387.8 million artificial intelligence supercomputer for Europe, with deployment scheduled for the second half of 2027, the company says. Hosted by the LUMI AI Factory consortium at CSC’s data center in Kajaani, Finland, the system will provide a tenfold increase in AI capacity and nearly double the high-performance computing power of the existing LUMI supercomputer.
“With LUMI-AI, EuroHPC JU has now signed its sixth AI Factory procurement contract,” said Anders Jensen, EuroHPC JU Executive Director, adding that these systems will form a powerful European AI infrastructure ecosystem. The project is funded equally by EuroHPC JU and a consortium of six countries: Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland.
LUMI-AI’s Tenfold Capacity Boosts European AI Infrastructure
The €387.8 million supercomputer is designed to address a broad range of workloads, accelerating both AI training and inference while also enabling large-scale scientific simulations crucial for future research and industrial advancements. Serving as the computing backbone of the LUMI AI Factory, LUMI-AI will support innovation across multiple sectors, from industrial applications to scientific inquiry.
Sustainability is a key focus of the LUMI-AI project; Bull’s patented Direct Liquid Cooling solution, utilizing warm water, will maximize energy efficiency. This technology will not only cool the system but also capture excess heat for reuse in Kajaani’s district heating network, increasing the proportion of heating derived from recovered data center energy.
Emmanuel Le Roux, CEO of Bull, stated that LUMI-AI marks a milestone for European AI and for Bull, building on the company’s established track record in delivering AI Factories and exascale systems. The supercomputer will be built on Bull’s latest BullSequana XH3500 architecture, and will incorporate high-performance storage from IBM and data center networking expertise from Nokia alongside Bull’s BXI interconnect.
Owned by EuroHPC JU, the system is intended to help European researchers and industry tackle challenges in fields like health, climate, and disruptive technologies, according to Kimmo Koski, Managing Director of CSC, IT Center for Science, who added that LUMI-AI’s modern capabilities combined with the LUMI-IQ quantum computer will help European researchers and industry tackle unforeseen research and innovation challenges. This project reinforces Bull’s European leadership in developing energy-efficient and complex AI infrastructures, driven by over 1,600 patents and manufacturing excellence.
With LUMI-AI, EuroHPC JU has now signed its sixth AI Factory procurement contract for a next-generation AI-optimised supercomputer.
