Xanadu Quantum Technologies has expanded its U.S. workforce more than five times since 2023, indicating rapid growth in the field of photonic quantum computing. This expansion is centered around a new office in Albany, New York, a developing hub for quantum innovation and semiconductor research, and now includes a distributed presence spanning 19 states. According to Dr. Christian Weedbrook, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Xanadu, demand for quantum computing is high and the company’s growth in the United States reflects the talent and strategic partnerships it has built across the semiconductor and technology industries to meet that demand. Xanadu’s Aurora system has established a foundation for future fault-tolerant quantum systems through modularity and networkability, allowing integration with existing classical data centers, a key advantage of their photonic approach.
U.S. Expansion Anchored by Albany Quantum Hub
Xanadu’s U.S. presence has expanded significantly, with its workforce growing more than fivefold since 2023, a surge that reflects increasing demand within the quantum computing sector and the company’s ability to respond. This growth extends beyond established technology centers; Xanadu now maintains a distributed presence across 19 states, signaling a strategy to build a national network of quantum expertise rather than concentrating solely on traditional hubs. The choice of Albany reflects Xanadu’s focus on practical implementation and integration with existing infrastructure. Xanadu’s on-chip demonstration of GKP qubits resolved a significant scalability challenge, creating a photonic qubit platform suitable for mass production, achievements recognized in the journal Nature. This technical progress has fueled key industrial partnerships, including collaborations with Corning, Applied Materials, DISCO, and EV Group, and by co-locating with these partners, Xanadu aims to accelerate innovation and ensure rapid response times.
The company’s approach leverages established semiconductor and photonics supply chains, a strategy intended to expedite both research and manufacturing processes and accelerate progress toward scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computers. Xanadu anticipates continued significant growth in its U.S.-based workforce by year-end, solidifying its position to deliver on its mission of making quantum computing accessible and useful to a wider audience.
The demand for quantum computing has never been higher and our rapid growth in the United States is a testament to the talent and strategic partnerships we have built across the semiconductor and technology industries to help meet those demands.
