AQSolotl sets up Malaysia’s first quantum hardware base at UTM

AQSolotl Pte. Ltd., a Singapore-based company, is establishing research, development, and commercialization operations at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Technovation Park in Johor Bahru, making it Malaysia’s first quantum computing hardware company. This development stems from collaborations beginning in 2009, when UTM first built expertise in quantum technologies with The University of Osaka in Japan, and later expanding to include the Centre for Quantum Technologies at Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore.

UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim said, “This achievement demonstrates how sustained research, supported by international collaboration and local expertise, can be translated into technology, commercialization, talent development, and new industries for the country.” This move positions UTM as a key link between the research ecosystems of Malaysia and Singapore.

AQSolotl Establishes Malaysia’s First Quantum Hardware R&D&C Base at UTM

AQSolotl Pte. Ltd., a spin-off from Singapore’s quantum ecosystem, will focus on quantum computer controller development, extending a collaborative effort that began with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2018. This expansion builds upon earlier partnerships with Japanese institutions, including The University of Osaka, before the recent increase in quantum computing investment. The establishment signifies a direct translation of long-term research into industrial capacity within the region.

UTM’s quantum technology initiatives are led by Dr. Yap Yung Szen, alongside Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haza Nuzly Abdull Hamed and Dr. Koh Meng Hock; Dr. His contributions to the field garnered international recognition through inclusion in Quantum 100, a UNESCO-associated initiative celebrating quantum science and technology leaders.

The company’s visit to UTM on September 23, 2026, involved senior representatives from both organizations, including UTM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof.

This achievement demonstrates how sustained research, supported by international collaboration and local expertise, can be translated into technology, commercialisation, talent development and new industries for the country.

Ivy Delaney has been working with neural networks and machine learning since the mid-nineties, back when a couple of hidden layers and a long afternoon of training counted as ambitious. She has watched the field go from academic curiosity to the thing quietly running underneath everything, and she brings that long view to quantum computing. For Quantum Zeitgeist she covers the ground where the two fields meet. That means quantum machine learning and the variational algorithms it leans on, and it also means the less glamorous but more interesting story of classical machine learning already doing real work inside quantum machines, decoding error-correcting codes, calibrating noisy hardware and learning the error models that simulators depend on. She writes about the hardware those algorithms have to run on too, and about the post-quantum cryptography scramble that the same hardware has set off. Her stories typically start with the paper, whether that is peer-reviewed work, conference proceedings or an arXiv preprint, with the source linked so you can hold a claim up against the research it came from. She is unimpressed by benchmarks that will not say what they beat, and by demonstrations that only work in the press release.
