Local pure dephasing suppresses single-spin coherence, but it sustains continuous time-crystalline order in a fully connected ferromagnetic spin-1/2 ensemble with local decay. An exact operator identity elucidates the underlying mechanism; specifically, dephasing elevates the interaction energy, whereas energy relaxation occurring on a finite timescale transforms this charging into delayed feedback. Utilizing homogeneous mean-field theory, researchers rigorously prove that dephasing constitutes a necessity for sustained periodic motion within this model and that feedback precisely counteracts transverse damping across each complete cycle. Further investigation extends beyond the scope of mean field analysis to provide additional insights.
Sustained Time-Crystalline Order via Size-Dependent Decay in Spin Ensembles
A previously unobserved phenomenon, algebraically decreasing decay rates within fully connected ferromagnetic spin-$1/$2 ensembles, enables sustained continuous time-crystalline order through pure dephasing. Previously, maintaining such temporal order required coherent driving or incoherent pumping; now it’s possible using only local dissipation channels. The team proved that pure dephasing isn’t merely compatible with periodic motion but essential for its existence when local energy decays occur, establishing an exact operator identity revealing how charging from decaying spins generates delayed feedback on transverse magnetization.
Quantum oscillatory modes revealed frequencies approach non-zero mean-field values and per-spin weights remain appreciable even as scale increases. Further semiclassical modelling showed recurrent switching between oscillating states and two stable fixed points, indicating fluctuations both interrupt and reactivate collective motion, suggesting an intermediate active channel exists beyond simple periodic behaviour. Local dephasing is not just compatible with temporal order; it’s key in systems experiencing energy decay.
Liouvillian Dynamics Enable Autonomous Oscillations and Metastable Order
The relative amplitude and phase of energy and longitudinal magnetization are determined by Liouvillian modes. Temporal order exhibits algebraically decreasing decay rates with system size, frequencies approaching nonzero mean-field values, alongside comparable per-spin oscillatory weights and stationary two-time correlations. Semiclassical trajectories further reveal recurrent switching between a limit-cycle region and two symmetry-related stationary regions: fluctuations interrupt collective oscillations while reactivating them, providing an intermediate channel between these states.
Local dephasing serves as a resource for autonomous collective motion; the resulting temporal order can participate in metastable dynamics. Continuous time crystals extend spontaneous ordering to persistent collective motion, differing from periodically driven discrete time crystals through their origin under time-independent dynamics. Dissipation supports this order, expanding its constructive role in quantum state engineering by coupling constituents through shared environmental channels; with independent local dissipation, interactions organize their motion.
Researchers have explored such interaction-based oscillations across diverse systems including spin ensembles, atomic configurations, photonic structures and coupled arrangements. Experimental platforms include atoms, cavity setups, Rydberg gases, rare-earth doped solids and various spin ensemble implementations. Pure dephasing presents a unique possibility: it is ubiquitous in realistic spin ensembles but generally considered unwanted decoherence suppressing coherence without directly changing populations or providing an obvious excitation channel.
While dephasing can modify interacting nonequilibrium dynamics, whether its potential extends to sustaining autonomous temporal order remains unclear. Could this localize pure dephasing become essential for continuous time crystalline order? The team demonstrated how local pure dephasing sustains collective temporal order within a fully connected ferromagnetic spin-$1/$2 ensemble with independent local decay; their work comprises four main contributions.
First, the mechanism of dephasing-driven oscillations involves an exact operator identity separating energy relaxation from a source proportional to transverse pair correlations, homogeneous mean-field theory shows periodic collective oscillations require pure dephasing when local decay is present. They showed that cycle-integrated work compensates for transverse damping along a periodic orbit.
Second, quantum signatures of time crystalline order are revealed beyond mean field by an operator identity determining relative amplitude and phase in Liouvillian modes. Third, intertwined oscillations and metastability manifest through semiclassical trajectories revealing coexistence between limit cycles and symmetry-related stable fixed points.
Broken axes show t/T1 ∈[0, 1.2] and [16.2, 17.4], with identical vertical scales. lations with periods of residence near either fixed point before reactivating oscillatory motion, this region also participates in switching between stationary states while occupation-time statistics characterise intermittency. The paper is organized as follows: Section II introduces the model and mean-field dynamics; Sections III and IV establish the energy feedback mechanism and its quantum signatures; Section V examines metastable intermittency; Sec. VI addresses observability and durability; and Sec. VII discusses implications and concludes.

(3c) illustrates how pure dephasing transforms relaxation into sustained collective motion: without it, longitudinal magnetization approaches a stationary value [(b)]. Increasing γφ from zero to 1.5 with unchanged Hamiltonian and initial state produces persistent periodic response [(c)], demonstrating that this added channel sustains oscillations despite enhancing transverse damping, this autonomous motion requires neither coherent driving nor incoherent pumping.
Besides the polarized fixed point (0, 0, −1), Eqs. For Γ1 > 0 all roots have negative real parts throughout the existence domain. The limit cycle therefore coexists with two locally stable fixed points rather than emerging from their Hopf destabilization; asymptotic response depends on which basin contains initial state as in other time-crystal models exhibiting non-Hopf transitions or stationary periodic coexistence.
To understand how local dephasing sustains continuous time-crystalline order within a fully connected ferromagnetic spin-$1/$2 ensemble experiencing local decay, they examine an exact operator identity: dephasing raises interaction energy while finite timescale energy relaxation generates delayed feedback.
Within homogeneous mean-field theory, pure dephasing is necessary for periodic motion when local decay occurs, cycle-integrated work from this feedback exactly balances transverse damping along a periodic orbit.
This research demonstrated that local pure dephasing, a process suppressing single-spin coherence, can sustain continuous time-crystalline order within a fully connected ferromagnetic spin-1/2 ensemble despite experiencing local decay. The study revealed that dephasing increases interaction energy which is then converted into delayed feedback via energy relaxation; this feedback balances damping and enables periodic motion. Analysis of Liouvillian spectra showed algebraically decreasing decay rates with system size, indicating the persistence of temporal order through fluctuations between oscillatory and stable states. These findings establish local dephasing as an element supporting collective oscillations and metastable dynamics.
