The US Department of the Treasury has established the Quantum Readiness Task Force to address vulnerabilities in the financial sector, framing a shift to post-quantum cryptography as a risk control measure for banking, insurance, and payment systems. This public-private initiative stems from President Trump’s Executive Order 14412, continuing national cybersecurity efforts across administrations.
The Task Force will operate through three workstreams, Sector Alignment & PQC Transition, Third-Party & Vendor Readiness, and Digital Assets and Emerging Technology Risk, to coordinate adoption of quantum-safe technology. “The Financial Sector Quantum Readiness Task Force will help ensure that the transition to quantum-safe technology is coordinated, risk-based, and operationally resilient,” said Luke Pettit, Treasury Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions.
Executive Order 14412 Initiates Financial Sector Quantum Readiness
The Task Force’s structure prioritizes granular risk assessment, dividing efforts into three workstreams beyond broad quantum threat mitigation. Financial institutions will inventory and enforce PQC compliance throughout their vendor networks, potentially driving PQC adoption across the wider commercial technology supply chain. Beyond traditional finance, the Task Force will address digital assets and emerging technologies, requiring blockchain, tokenized assets, and decentralized financial infrastructure to meet PQC standards.
Organizations must move away from fixed cryptographic implementations and embrace crypto-agility to adapt to evolving threats. As the timeline shortens, this represents a push toward global financial sector alignment on quantum-readiness ahead of escalating threats.
The Financial Sector Quantum Readiness Task Force will help ensure that the transition to quantum-safe technology is coordinated, risk-based, and operationally resilient. By bringing together government and industry to lead the transition to quantum-safe finance, the U.S. will strengthen trust in its financial system and reinforce its economic and national security.
