Rigetti Computing & PSC to Build $5M Quantum-Classical Supercomputer Testbed

A $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation will fund construction of the TangleLab system at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, integrating a Rigetti Novera quantum processing unit with classical supercomputing resources. The project, a partnership between PSC, HPE, Rigetti Computing, and the University of Pittsburgh, aims to advance hybrid quantum-classical workflows and benchmark applications for future use.

“TangleLab builds on PSC’s long tradition of making advanced computing technologies accessible to the broader research and education community,” said Barr von Oehsen, PSC’s Executive Director and Principal Investigator for TangleLab. The new testbed expands on PSC’s experience with heterogeneous supercomputers since 1991.

This $5 million initiative, funded by the National Science Foundation, moves beyond standalone quantum computer development to focus on practical integration with existing supercomputing resources. Researchers anticipate this approach will reveal how quantum and classical systems can best collaborate throughout the entire computational process, from initial data preparation to final results. The TangleLab system will utilize HPE ProLiant Compute DL384 Gen12 servers, DL385 Gen11 servers, Cray Storage Systems C500, and HPE Networking components, all connected to the Rigetti Novera QPU.

This combination allows scientists to explore how quantum processing can accelerate specific tasks within larger, complex simulations and analyses. “Through TangleLab, we plan to build a testbed at PSC that lets researchers benchmark hybrid quantum-classical applications and better understand how these systems can work together from pre-processing and compilation to workload management and orchestration,” said Masoud Mohseni, Senior Distinguished Technologist and Director of HPE Quantum at HPE Labs.

The system’s architecture is intended to facilitate a deeper understanding of the interplay between quantum and classical computing paradigms. Building on a history of accelerating computations by assigning tasks to the most appropriate processor type, this latest project represents a significant expansion into quantum information processing. Rigetti Computing anticipates that the integration of quantum computing with high-performance computing will enable a new product offering for other organizations.

Subodh Kulkarni, CEO of Rigetti. Bruno Abreu, PSC’s Deputy Scientific Director, clarified the project’s scope, stating, “With TangleLab, we are looking into integrating quantum technologies into classical high-performance computing environments to enable hybrid quantum-classical workflows that can demonstrate quantum utility.” The goal is to establish an open platform for future quantum information processing and distribution as core elements of advanced cyberinfrastructure.
