Telecom giant DOCOMO trims signaling with D-Wave quantum tech

NTT DOCOMO has deployed a second quantum computing application in its live network, achieving a 65.3% reduction in daily peak volume of location registration signals, D-Wave says. The mobile operator addressed traditionally opposing network challenges, reducing both location registration and paging signals with a solution powered by D-Wave’s annealing quantum technology. This optimization, completed in approximately five minutes for a representative problem spanning 333 base stations, is now incorporated into DOCOMO’s daily operations. “DOCOMO is showing telecom operators around the world what production quantum adoption looks like,” said Dr. Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave.

D-Wave Annealing Reduces TA-List Signaling by 65.3%

This optimization addressed traditionally opposing network challenges; the application simultaneously lowered paging signals by 7.0%, a feat previously difficult to accomplish. The system addressed a representative problem encompassing 333 base stations, three TA-Lists, and nine tracking areas, completing the complex calculation in approximately five minutes. This deployment expands DOCOMO’s use of quantum computing beyond its initial application focused on paging signals, now optimizing TA-Lists across multiple tracking areas to improve overall network efficiency, according to D-Wave.
