TechCreate Group Ltd. is collaborating with pQCee Pte Ltd to integrate post-quantum cryptography into its QR Hybrid POS terminals, proactively addressing the emerging threat of “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” (HNDL) attacks. The companies intend to move beyond vulnerable encryption standards like RSA and ECC, safeguarding sensitive cardholder data and transaction keys against future decryption by quantum computers. This initiative aims to defend communications between customers and financial institutions using pQCee’s SafeQuard tool, a quantum-safe cryptography solution. “Quantum-safe security has become increasingly important for the future of digital payments infrastructure,” said TechCreate CEO Heng Hai Lim, emphasizing the critical need to enhance quantum-resistant encryption standards for secure transactions. TechCreate and pQCee aim to be among the first in the region to deploy a quantum-safe POS terminal.
NIST PQC Algorithms Integrated into QR Hybrid POS Terminals
The companies integrate National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) approved post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms into its QR Hybrid POS terminals. This strategy addresses a future vulnerability; malicious actors are actively intercepting encrypted transaction data with the intention of decrypting it once quantum computers powerful enough to break current encryption standards become available. Unlike typical data breaches focused on immediate exploitation, HNDL attacks represent a long-term risk requiring anticipatory defenses. TechCreate’s focus on QR Hybrid POS terminals is significant, given the increasing prevalence of these systems in retail and service industries globally. The implementation of SafeQuard specifically targets the mitigation of HNDL attacks by bolstering the security of cardholder data and transaction keys. According to pQCee CEO Tan Teik Guan, “By embedding quantum-safe protections into the fabric of payments, both TechCreate and pQCee help the entire ecosystem stay resilient,” highlighting the collaborative effort to ensure long-term transactional confidence for banks, merchants, and consumers alike. The integration of PQC is also intended to align with evolving regulatory standards as global bodies begin to formalize post-quantum security requirements.
SafeQuard Tool Mitigates “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” Attacks
Unlike immediate exploitation, HNDL attacks involve the long-term storage of encrypted information, awaiting the advent of sufficiently powerful quantum computing capabilities to break current encryption algorithms like RSA and ECC. TechCreate Group Ltd. and pQCee Pte Ltd are addressing this emerging risk by integrating post-quantum cryptography into QR Hybrid POS terminals, aiming to fortify payment systems against future decryption attempts. The collaboration seeks to integrate post-quantum encryption without sacrificing the performance, scalability, or interoperability of existing payment systems. The initiative also anticipates forthcoming regulatory standardization of post-quantum cryptography, positioning the upgraded terminals to align with evolving security requirements.
