Quantum Australia programs drove $83.1M in economic value

Quantum Australia’s programs generated $83.1 million in economic value, exceeding six times the initial public investment, according to new modeling by Avant Group over a five-year period. This figure encompasses grant and industry funding, private investment, and commercial contracts signed in just two years of operation.

The organization also facilitated the creation of 15 new quantum companies and established 110 industry-research partnerships, alongside over $50 million in grant funding for quantum use-cases. “Quantum Australia exists to connect researchers, entrepreneurs, industry, endusers, investors and government to turn science into ventures with the potential to solve real-world problems,” says CEO Petra Andrén.

Quantum Australia’s national programs generated $83.1 million. The organization’s impact extends beyond immediate financial returns by fostering a network designed to translate scientific advancements into practical applications with economic benefit. These ventures span diverse sectors, from healthcare, with FeBI Technologies’ quantum sensing for iron status, to logistics, where QFactorial aims to reduce operational costs. SpaceCoLAB, another program graduate, has developed a secure communication system leveraging quantum states, while Quantum Lock offers tamper-proof solutions for critical infrastructure.

Gridstate and Cirnetiq are focused on improving the performance and scalability of photonic quantum computers, addressing key technical hurdles in the field. “These six companies are the result of over two years of building Australia’s quantum innovation pipeline,” said Petra Andrén, CEO of Quantum Australia.

The success in company creation is underpinned by substantial investment in collaborative research. This coordinated approach, highlighted by a recent Memorandum of Cooperation between Australia and Japan, is designed to ensure sustained momentum and global competitiveness.

Andrén emphasized the importance of continued support, stating, “The next challenge is maintaining that momentum through continued national coordination and sustained investment ensuring these companies can scale in Australia, create jobs here, and compete globally.” The organization reports a realized return of $2.15 in direct benefits for every $1 invested, rising to $6.87 when accounting for broader economic effects, signaling a promising trajectory for Australia’s quantum industry.

As a result, Australian quantum research is becoming Australian quantum companies, developing technologies for healthcare, critical infrastructure, logistics, and computing to solve real-world problems.
