Quantum Standards Network opens quantum standards network for UK innovators

On September 29th, the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) launched the Quantum Standards Network (QSN) online Community, a digital hub designed to support collaboration among UK quantum innovators, researchers, businesses and policymakers. Led by NPL in partnership with five organizations, BSI, UKRI National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC), National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and UKQuantum, the QSN aims to coordinate national efforts on quantum standards and directly support the ambitions of the UK’s National Quantum Strategy.

The new platform offers members access to resources including webinars and exclusive events, allowing them to learn how standards support innovation and accelerate the commercialization of quantum technologies. Through this network, the QSN intends to connect and empower the rapidly growing UK quantum ecosystem.

Quantum Standards Network Launches UK Innovator Community

This platform offers a central hub for innovators, researchers, businesses and policymakers to share knowledge and engage with experts, accelerating the development of standardized approaches to quantum technologies. Designed as a collaborative resource, the new online platform provides access to the latest developments in quantum standardization and opportunities for engagement. Members can explore emerging frameworks shaping the future of quantum technology and connect with a broad network of organizations across the expanding UK quantum ecosystem.

The QSN is hosting its first community webinar, “Quantum Standards Network: Connecting the community, shaping the future,” on November 10th. This event will introduce the network and its underlying community, while also highlighting the importance of quantum technologies to the UK’s future.

Attendees will hear perspectives from international experts and industry leaders, learning how standards are beginning to influence the field and how they can contribute to future development activities. The QSN community is open to all stakeholders, including small and medium-sized enterprises, start-ups, researchers, investors, policymakers and standards professionals, and registration is available at www.qsn.org.uk.

Ivy Delaney has been working with neural networks and machine learning since the mid-nineties, back when a couple of hidden layers and a long afternoon of training counted as ambitious. She has watched the field go from academic curiosity to the thing quietly running underneath everything, and she brings that long view to quantum computing. For Quantum Zeitgeist she covers the ground where the two fields meet. That means quantum machine learning and the variational algorithms it leans on, and it also means the less glamorous but more interesting story of classical machine learning already doing real work inside quantum machines, decoding error-correcting codes, calibrating noisy hardware and learning the error models that simulators depend on. She writes about the hardware those algorithms have to run on too, and about the post-quantum cryptography scramble that the same hardware has set off. Her stories typically start with the paper, whether that is peer-reviewed work, conference proceedings or an arXiv preprint, with the source linked so you can hold a claim up against the research it came from. She is unimpressed by benchmarks that will not say what they beat, and by demonstrations that only work in the press release.
