Europe Advances Sovereignty In HPC And AI With New RISC-V Initiative

The DARE project, funded by EuroHPC JU, seeks to develop cutting-edge HPC hardware and software using RISC-V architecture, an open instruction set designed for energy efficiency and scalability in exascale computing. The initiative involves 38 partners from 13 European countries, coordinated by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), to advance Europe’s digital sovereignty in HPC and AI technologies.

The DARE project is a beacon of collaboration in Europe’s quest for technological independence. Spearheaded by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) with 38 partners from 13 countries, this initiative harnesses collective expertise to develop cutting-edge hardware components essential for high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI).

At its core, DARE focuses on three key innovations: a Vector Accelerator (VEC) for precise scientific computations, an AI Processing Unit (AIPU) optimized for machine learning tasks, and a General-Purpose Processor (GPP) designed for versatility. These components are built using the RISC-V architecture, an open-source solution that reduces reliance on non-European technologies, aligning with EuroHPC JU‘s mission to bolster Europe’s HPC competitiveness.

Building on previous projects like EPI and MEEP, DARE aims to create a seamless ecosystem that integrates hardware and software. This holistic approach addresses current computational needs and anticipates future challenges in AI and quantum computing. The involvement of SMEs brings innovation and agility, tackling issues such as software compatibility and developer tools.

Despite logistical challenges in coordinating a large consortium, collaborating with other European initiatives maximizes the project’s impact. DARE represents Europe’s strategic push towards technological sovereignty, fostering digital autonomy and global competitiveness through specialized hardware and robust partnerships.

There is so much happening right now in the field of technology, whether AI or the march of robots. Adrian is an expert on how technology can be transformative, especially frontier technologies. But Quantum occupies a special space. Quite literally a special space. A Hilbert space infact, haha! Here I try to provide some of the news that is considered breaking news in the Quantum Computing and Quantum tech space.
